OF COURSE WE'LL DO IT AGAIN

OF COURSE WE'LL DO IT AGAIN

WE FAILED TODAY.  The plan was to ride from the surf in Dana Point to Summit of Big Bear.  135 mile, 16,000 of vert. That wasn't the problem...

... 99 degrees with a slight tailwind was devastating.

No relief.

I've wanted to do this ride for decades but never really figured out a good route, or which bike, or who'd be willing to attempt it.

Then, gravel became a thing and I'll just pause right here...

... the route is epic.

Lots of gravel, a stealth 40ish mile bike trail to skirt you mercifully through urban sprawl, hidden roads through gorgeous neighborhoods...

... and some singletrack to keep it real.

The beautiful bouquet of enthusiasm for adventure began to wilt around mile 70.  Convection-style heat, blacktop...

... scorched and dry and dead land.

I made a major blunder in Loma Linda.  We should have stopped for cool liquids but I was certain we were only a few miles from our rendezvous.  It was infernal...

... so hot, I'd forgotten we rode to the start and added a good 6 miles.

These miles turned out to be all uphill.

Starting with a slick and dusty hiking trail and connecting to a supersmooth tarmac climb though custom custom dreamhomes...

... it should have been a wonderful climb.

We pulled in, ruined, to find the van waiting and willing.

Frozen Oreo icecreams, cokes, chips, got us resuscitated us.  After a lengthy stop, we got after it just in time to hit another wonderful climb...

... at 2pm.

Couldn't be hotter.

I could tell we wouldn't all make it.  There was no point in one soldering on for hours.

We made the call.

Surfergirl performed a perfect rescue, showering us with icecold treats.  We began the long journey back home.

You'd thing we'd be quiet.

Ashamed.

Not our style, and our ladies know us oh so well, as evidenced by this message

Why do it again?

  1. It's an absolutely incredible route
  2. Insane Zone 2 training, ave HR 129
  3. It's on the Calendar..

... therefore, it must be completed.

We're targeting late Fall, to avoid the insane heat that scorches the I.E

Sunrises at 7, and sets at 6.
We'll roll at 5 with lights to assist.
We have all the stops figured out, it will be supported.

Yeah, we've thought it through.
