A LITTLE SECRET SPEED TIP

THE MORNING WRECKING CREW was not what I expected.  First, I wanted to skip it.  Second, I got shamed into going.  Third, I...

... felt pretty darn good.

Not at first.

Going up the driveway to the start stung my legs.

I said Hi,
figuring I'd be off the back in minutes.

But, a funny thing happened on the way up the paceline...

... the legs kinda came around.

By the end, I was setting fast times on all kinds of segments (for me, this year).

Even got a KOM on the Hour of Power segment, post group ride...

... it stood for a 3 minutes.

Then Love Watts uploaded his ride and stole it by 2 seconds.

Which is a lungwinded way to share a little secret...

... very long slow distance can equal speed if done correctly.

Saturday's ride was very long,
also, very steady.

Mostly Zone 2.

Which means I was tired at the end of the day, however...

... my muscles weren't wrecked.

Was it just the throttled effort?

Nope.

While I didn't drink enough post ride, I did get in a pretty good meal right away.

That matters.

Gotta get those muscles to recover.

Had I pushed really hard and gone way deep on the efforts, or fouled up the nutrition, or both, the resultant damage to the ol' legs woulda been much worse.

Instead, it was a remarkable day.

Nowwwwwwww... it's time for a few easy rides before the weekend.

THE DUMBEST DIET EVER

I'M LIGHTER THAN I'VE BEEN IN 6 MONTHS.  Shocking, since I dropped 3 lbs over the weekend.  I've just got to...

... share my secret with the world.

So, you nevereverever do something this dumb.

For the last leg of Saturday's epic quest, I filled up 3 waterbottles, plus a ton of bars in my pack.

Little did I know, we'd be riding for 6 more hours.

That's a good thing, right?

All those supplies.

For sure.

Yes.

One,
giant,
problem.

I barely drank one bottle,
didn't eat any food.

When I finally got indoors,
I didn't eat much,
wasn't thirsty.

And that my fine athletic friends is the absolute dumbest thing we can do...

... racing or not.

Being thirsty,
being hungry,
truly is for dummies.

Training, racing, living,
we need hydration,
We need calories.

WHAT GOOD IS BRAVERY?

WHEN I INVITE YOU THRONGS OF READERS, plus all my local riding pals, to do something seemingly impossible, I get a lot of No thanks because...

... who wants to fail?

Nobody.

Oh, except those want the thrill of owning a monumental personal victory.

It takes guts,
perseverance,
and determination...

... to attempt the diabolically divine.

Which is exactly how my friend and fellow sicko Kevin described the adventure.

From the misty shores of dawn at Dana Point,
to the lofty views 8000' above the world at sunset...

... just taking a crack at it says all you need to know about the brave who went us.

And that's the problem.

Bravery can get us in all kinds a trouble.

Like the guys who left before sunrise,
who'd never ridden the route,
who had to perform surgery,
on a bad shifter.

Bravery can also save our baconflavered gel pack...

... by causing us to look at unplanned challenges and say Bring It!

What else was unplanned?

Spencer getting a nail through his tire,
which ripped the rim tape ruining his tubeless set up.

Me knocking my derailler hard enough to massively deform the hanger,
ergo no shifting.

But, when we're determined, we solve the problems...

  • So, Michael goes door to door begging for plumbing tape and finds an off-duty plumber
  • Wilt, who joined our group along the way, directs me Cyclery USA for a masterful repair

... and we get back on course.

Bravery can give us unwarranted confidence.

While we enjoyed a hamburger, fries and Coke before the final 9 mile climb up a rough and rocky fire road...

... it was warm and we were feeling great.

We rolled out with tons of sunlight,
some windbreakers,
and swagger.

We were ready to conquer the beast.

Figured it would take about two hours.

It was 80 degrees at the bottom.

Four hours later,
in the dark,
42 degrees.

Not the worst...

  • We were exhausted
  • Freezing
  • Hungry

... and LOST!!!!

Our meager headlights,
lack of solid geographical info,
and the mind numbing cold conspired...

... to ruin us.

Some of us were brave.
All were calm and supportive.
To be honest, I was losing touch with rational thinking.

We'd rolled at 5:15AM,
it was now after 10PM...

... and we made about a million reroute decisions the final miles.

I texted Surfergirl,
Drive to Snow Summit,
crank the heater,
bring blankets.

We could see the city lights,
couldn't get there.

Until we did.

Finally we attacked a fast, flowy singletrack...

... like a lumbering, frozen caterpillar.

 ---

Huuuuuge, thank yous to Surfergirl for awesome swag support...

... and the brave souls who took on the challenge to do something impossible.

I'd never do alone.

We didn't all make it.

Not uncommon.

We all failed our first 2 tries.

To a rider, all are committed to return...

... and conquer!

---

Now that we've completed the Surf N Summit in October and May,
we've determined May is the optimal month.

You're invited to do the impossible with us next year.

Plan accordingly.

IT'S HAPPENING!

TOMORROW IS A BIG DAY.  It's been just over 5 months since my brain injury.  We never took SurfNSummit off the calendar, instead...

... we aimed for that date!

10 of my closest friends - some I've never met - joined the challenge.

I'm so grateful for the support and camaraderie.

It's gonna be a great day.

Anytime we get the buy-in from of group of people who decide to do something epic together it's...

... a lot easier to prep and accomplish something epic.

And, this ain't nothin'...

https://www.strava.com/routes/3220522868121573398

123 miles

16000' of vert

... it's a heckfire motivating.

What are you planning tomorrow,
or in the coming months,
with your besties?

I hope you get it done, and I hope...

... it seems impossible.

THE 5 IMMUTABLE LAWS OF FITNESS

IN WORLD WHERE EVERYONE HAS their own truth, it's hard to tell what is really the truth.  And, it matters.  Truth...

... makes everything clear and easy.

So, let me be as clear as I can be.

These are the 5 laws,
commandments if you will.

  1. REST.  Get plenty of rest.  Sleep a lot.  Doing less and resting may not make sense to a beginner, but we get it.  Right?  Sleep is critical.
  2. GOOD FOOD.  Keep it simple.  Don't eat sugar or drink alcohol or do drugs.  Do eat whole foods, meals where we can identify the ingredients.  For example, a steak salad vs a protein bar.
  3. GO HARD SPARINGLY.  We need to have the brutally hard efforts, once or twice a week. That's it.  Not every day.
  4. GO EASY ABUNDANTLY.  The rest of our endurance training should be easy and fun and rejuvenating.
  5. LIFT WEIGHTS.  Resistance exercise, heavy weight and low reps, builds power and makes bones strong.  I like large muscle groups, primarily pull ups, pushups, and squats.

That's it.

Okay, that's not it.

But, that is the truth and when we get that right...

... we're 95% there.

There, being extremely fit and healthy.

Notice, doing that is practically free...

... just takes some dedication.

WHY BEGIN WITH THE FINISH IN MIND?

THE PATH WORKING BACKWARDS FROM THE START is a strange one.  Who the heck walks, runs, rides, swims backwards?  Here's a better way...

... begin with the finish in mind.

It's more powerful.

Want to get married?
Date like the winner you know you are.

Want to raise good kids?
Raise 'em like the winner you know you are,
winners they can be.

Want to win a race, set a PR, win the group sprint?
Train like the winner you know you are.

See the finish line clearly, then...

... all we need to do becomes obvious.

Not a mystery.

Not awkward like swimming backwards.
How do you even do that?

Move forward.

IS THERE SUCH A THING AS MAGIC WHEELS

RIDING WITH LOVE WATTS ON THE ROAD, I'm reminded of how important wheels are.  He purchased my supersnazzy, ceramic bearing carbon wheels because I just...

... had to have the latest and greatest.

Off with the rim brake wheels,
on to disc brakes on the fancyshmancy bike.

ENVE 5.6's

I'm glad he got my old wheels vs one of my direct competitors because...

... he rolls away from me any time it's too steep to pedal downhill.

It's annoying.

It bugs me.

I constantly question myself...

... What the heck was I thinking?

And, it gets worse.

The weekly roadride reminder is leaking over into all my wheelsets.

Are they magic?

Or

S-L-O-W?

How to tell?

The lowtech, yet reliable way, is to coast downhill on an windless day and determine which set of wheels is faster.

  • Same tire
  • Same air pressure

Then, we can go play with

  • Tires
  • Widths
  • Pressures

And, add additional fine tuning via

  • Helmet
  • Apparel
  • Waterbottles
  • Cable routing
  • Body position

Oh, boy...

... so much fun to be had!

TAPERING QUESTIONS

IS TAPERING OUR TRAINING ART OR SCIENCE?  We've all had the big quest on the calendar, done tons and tons of training, then...

... decided it's time to taper.

Is it enough to just cut the miles?

How much should we cut?

What about intensity?

Oh, the questions we have!

Got an email this morning from Tony, who lives Downunder.  He caught Covid two weeks prior to last weekend's A race, thought his event would was wrecked.

Rested completely for a week.

Did a little training the next week.

Smashed the race, setting all kinds of PRs.

Talked to Andy this morning, he was forced off his bike for months after catching a nasty stomach bug and Xterra Worlds last October.

This week he's off to Xterra Nats and feels better than he's felt in years.

I'm not saying we need to get deathly ill or break bones to have our best days ever, but...

... maybe a little more rest would do our bodies good?

THESE ARE THE BEST RIDES

GOOD FORTUNE TO TRAVEL, allowed me to ride a bunch of new terrain, plus explore a new network of trails.  This week will be a good reminder...

... of why our favorite routes are so special.

Our most cherished rides are rarely the obscure, remote places.

Those places are great,
but they are missing something.

I'm already excited to do the local Tuesday Morning Wrecking Crew this week.

Why?

I've done it probably 1,000 times.

You'd think once a week for twenty years would lose its luster.

Instead, the times that we...

  • cleared the gap on a big jump
  • got caught in a snow storm
  • made the winning break
  • smashed a segment
  • made a new friend

... make all the difference.

Take yesterday's adventure.

We have a trail in St. George that Surfergirl loves: Bear Claw Poppy.  A gentle climb, and a fast and flowy return.  We ride it often when we are passing through.

After an hour with her, I met up with local friend Kevi, to ride a newly accessible canyon.

We pedaled back to his house and I noticed the right rear van tire was deflating.

A piece of metal had sliced on through.

7pm on a Saturday night is not a good time to need a flat repair.

While showering, I thought...

... We're gonna get a miracle.

At the same time, Kevi thought to call an acquaintance who had just sold a string of tire shops.

My new best friend, Jake, grabs his tools and drives 30 minutes to us and fixes the flat in a about 15 minutes.

Amazing.

We were able to make it home by 3:30 am, able to spend Mother's Day at home with kids.

That was a miracle.

The kind of episode we'll remember for years to come...

... every time we ride Bear Claw Poppy.

These rides and routes we know so well become our treasures because...

... that's where many of our best memories exist.

WINNING IS NOT AN OPTION

IN ANY COMPETITION, it's possible to define winning as climbing to the top of the podium.  The moment we finally pull it all together and...

... look down on those who tried and came up short.

There's a problem.

This isn't the reason we are training and racing.

Sure, every now and never we might find ourselves on one of the podium steps...

... maybe even the top.

We'll get the accompanying congratulations, and rightly soak up the moment.

But, winning?
Conquerer of all comers?
Champion for ever and ever?

Not us.

We know there is always something we could do better and...

... we are endlessly fascinated with our personal pursuit, scoreboard or not.

We want to know...

... what are we capable of accomplishing?

What's next?!!

HAVE YOU HIT THE WALL OF GRAY?

AT THE TOP OF A 90 MINUTE CLIMB, I succumbed to the terrain.  Not the steepness, not the wildness of the area.  Gravely dirt had turned...

... from bird beaks to baby heads to small boulders.

OK, it was beginning to pitch straight up.

Climbing that stuff in 40 degree weather is easy to do in a jersey and arm warmers.

We're working.
Burning calories.
Creating all kinds of heat.

I stopped,
pulled my KOM Jacket from my back pocket...

... and started bombing back down.

Is this nirvana?

Not a soul around,
tacky, fast single track,
spring's green guard rails.

I came around a bend and saw a massive wall of gray.

Uh oh!

Off the trail,
on to the road,
I pressed harder on the pedals.

Drops of rain,
turned to frozen rain,
which turned to balls of hail...

... good thing I wore my most wholey, air-cooled helmet.

The icecream-type headache became...

... Crud, this could be bad.

I snagged a PR on this slight downhill bike trail, I've ridden dozens of times.

Nobody was out.

Duh!

Moral of the story?

Shift happens...

... get used to it, everything will be easier.

THE GOOD THING ABOUT BEING GOOD

MY BROTHER-IN-LAW WAS A LEGIT CAT 2 ROADIE during peak road cycling days of late 80's, early 90's.  Had I known that...

... I would have given him the thumbs up a lot sooner.

Who care's if they're happy together?

I've got someone to ride with at the family reunion.

Now, he's a good runner...

... because she's a good runner.

They do trailrunner things together.

Which means he's now merely a good cyclist.

That's the good thing about being an dedicated endurance athlete, with a little training...

... we can be good at just about any endurance activity we choose.

Not at the top of our potential, but in his case...

... the top of the relationship potential, by enduring together.

JUST COMMIT, AND QUIT

ONE OF MY PALS has been out of the game for a while.  Fitness dropped way down, and waist expanded somewhat out.  He's back, and...

... he needs a kick in the lycra.

His words...

... I made the big climb 20 seconds faster this week, just need to ditch my blubber now.

So, I gave him the honest truth.

Stop eating bread and sugar.

He hemmed and hawed, admitting either one of those to evils where his kryptonite.

It's really simple...

... just commit, and quit.

This morning, I read about a 99 year old man who is still remarkably active.  He had this to say about health...

... I weigh myself every morning, it's the best indicator of health.  If I'm up a few pounds, I cut back my intake for a few days.

WILL AI MAKE US SLOWER?

IT'S GOT AI!  Yeah, AI will write your term paper. Set up your training plan for you.  Of course, it will drive your car for you.  And...

... make us slower.

At everything.

How does AI drive our cars?

It learns.

It learns to read the road,
calculate effects of weather,
anticipate the actions of other drivers.

Which means we don't,
or if we did once have the skill we start to lose it.

Take riding singletrack for instance.

Climbing it's not to challenging unless there are rocks and switchbacks.

We're going slow.

We have the time to make all the calculations necessary to ascend without putting our feet down.

When we turn around, it's all the same data coming at us but a lot faster.

One of two things will happen:

  • We'll get behind on the calculations, panic and crash
  • We'll slip into a state of flow

When we are in flow...

  • We relax
  • Things slow down
  • We easily go much faster

... that is a beautiful feeling.

    UNFORGIVING NATURE

WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPPED and the frozen rain turned to snow I realized staying warm could be an issue.  I hustled back to the cabin because...

    ... nature is unforgiving.

    I got back.
    Cold.

    The heat was on,
    all was good.

    Until the heater quit!

    We crash.
    We bleed.
    We heal.

Hopefully we learn and remember things like...

    • at high altitude it can always snow
    • on rough terrain keep our bodies loose, fluid
    • breaking down in a remote area takes longer to get back

... being prepared with gear, fuel and skills matter.

    Nature is definitely unforgiving...

,.. all the more reason for us to be forgiving with each other.

    HOW TO CURE TRAINING BURNOUT

AFTER TEN WEEKS FOCUSED ON BUILDING BACK SOME FITNESS, I was feeling quite burned out.  We're two weeks away from the Surf N Summit...

... not the time to quit training.

The last few days have been just what the doctor ordered.

    • No agenda
    • No plan or route or group
    • No focussing on the computer readings

    • Yes, let's explore a new area

Fast, slow, long, short, easy, hard.

Mountain biking is the perfect antidote for me.

It's not what I'll be racing this summer,
or needing for the 120 miles and 16000' of vert of the upcoming challenge.

    Just fun and playful.

    Still riding.

    Still spinning.

Still filling the lungs with air,
and the legs with lactic acid.

But, with some jumps and berms and slides mixed in.

    Burned out?

    Change it up.

HOW TO PRETEND IT’S NOT A BIKE VACATION.

THE FIRST RULE OF BRINGING THE BIKE on a vacation is key.  It’s not hiding it the back of the van or car, and it’s not saying…

… I’ll only ride if the amazing doll house tour falls through.

Rule No. 1: Make sure the important stuff is the priority.

Today, that meant a 3.5 mile hike out to Observation Point.

    Fully appreciate it’s awesomeness.

    Hike back 3.5 miles,
    loving it.

Even if you have a nice blister brewing,
because you never hike or wear these shoes.

Follow that up with plans to grill up some dinner at sunset.

Once everything is taken care of…

… totally cool to check out the sweet local single track.

    Exactly how my day went.

    Perfect.

The single is a new addition the land here near my grandpa's cabin, which is the only reason a lugged the bike up here...

... to give it a more thorough inspection in the morning.

SOME RIDES ARE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OTHERS

I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN IT AS A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME.  I’d just crushed my phone in the van’s door jamb.  Ouch.  But, not as big as the ouch that precedes…

    Is my bike okay?

And, too think, I was really enjoying a playful moment on challenging single track in Southern Utah.

    Feeling good,
    confident,
    and fast.

    Shoulda stayed humble,
    cautious,
    aware.

Going down a rocky ledge, my front wheel caught in a hole.

    The bike stopped.

I arced high through the air.

We both landed among the jagged boulders.

    Nothing on me was broken.

A few tears in my fuselage.

In flight, I’d been hyper aware of my recovering cranium.

Surfergirl got to see it all.

    We laughed…

    It’s only a flesh wound!

Back at the trailhead, loading my bike into the van, I noticed the cracked seat stay.

It had taken a direct hit.

    Cracked halfway through.

    First day of our trip.

    Ugh.

    Drove straight to O’Reilly Autoparts.

This is gonna sound stupid, but ya got anything to repair carbon?

    Like carbon fiber?

    Just like that.

We’ll let’s see what JB Weld has.

    Music to my ears.

I know JB Weld can fix a cracked radiator.

Tomorrow, I’ll see how their carbon repair formula holds up.

    Wish us luck.

    DO YOU HAVE ATOMIC HABITS

IN ATOMIC HABITS, the great James Clear, made a point about how to write a best-selling book.  He's sold 15,000,000 copies to date.  His directive?...

    ... Be the book.

The point isn't that we should quit our day jobs and write a book,
though that would be a good excuse to ride, run and swim all day long.

However, as I think of my miraculous progress since coming out of ICU in January...

... two things are pretty obvious.

    • I'm basically following my own protocol from The 30-Day Rip On RaceDay Challenge.
    • I've made a few updates since I wrote the content for the challenge

For example, for the last 10 weeks I've been in the base-building phase.

    It's gone pretty well...

    • Fitness is up
    • Weight is coming down

... but I have lots of top-end to recover.

True power has been offline since the last races of the previous year.

How am I going to get that back?

How did I build the base?

    What are next steps?

    Since I'm being the book,
I think I ought to write the book....

... take all the content, update it and put it in book form.

To do it right, I think I need a huge challenge.

    Something ridiculous,
that would be a real test.

    A reason,
    a Why?

Something you might even want to get in on.

I'm not sure what it is yet.

    But, it's percolating.

Stay tuned as the rehab continues.

    TAKING TIME TO RIDE FAST

TO BE FASTER THAN 99% of the competition, we need to value our 1%.  Or, maybe several 1%s.  Assuming we sleep for 8 hours, Do you?...

... we have 960 waking minutes.

One measly 1% block of our waking hours is 9.6 minutes.

What can we do with 1% of our day to get faster?

    • Chop and prep a fresh salad
    • Stretch
    • A massage or Hypervolt session
    • Meditate
    • Clean and lube our chains
    • Check our tires and brake pads
    • PushUps and PullUps and Squats

Most of the things, like those above, we can do in less than 10 minutes...

... yet, we act like it'll take hours.

    I do.

    Maybe you don't.

It's not a question of if we have the time to get faster, but...

... will we use what we have correctly?

IT'S NOT THAT WE NEGLECT MOMENTUM, it's that we often don't respect it enough. As the great Sir Isaac Newton said, A bike in motion will stay in motion unless...

... acted upon by an outside force.

In other words, our legs move us forward, everything else...

... conspires to slow us down.

    Everything.

    Take turns.

Being able to carry our momentum through a turn means we spend less energy exiting the turn and getting back up to speed.

    If we're really good,
we might make those behind work much harder.

    If we're unskilled,
we spend all kinds of energy struggling to catch back on.

We get worn down by momentum suckers.

Remember, the corollary is Our parked bike will stay parked unless...

    ... acted upon by us.

I DO NOT THINK YOU KNOW THE MEANING OF THAT ZONE

THERE ARE FEW GUARANTEES IN LIFE.  One, however, is a lock.  Invite your veryfast friends to do a recon ride where everybody is "committed" to ride zone two.  Then...

    ... let the mayhem unfold.

Here's the bad and the good of it.

    I felt bad right away.

    Yes, I was suffering, sure.

But I was really feeling bad for all the suckers like me who thought this would be chill with a few efforts.

    Instead, the first three hours...

    ... was one massive effort.

    • 248 watts normalized power
    • Average HR 150 bpm
    • 3000' elevation gain

    Probably nothing for you,
    definitely something for me.

The gravel roads are shift right now.

    Ruts all over the place,
    stutter bumps everywhere else.

Fortunately, I decided to do some tire pressure testing today.

    I aired down.

26 lbs vs my normal 30 up front.

28 lbs vs my normal 32 in back.

I rimmed out a handful of times, both wheels.

    Mainly sharp edges or rocks.

Tires held up great - Conti Terra Speed 45s.

I think I can go lower.

No doubt when the trails are as nasty as they are it is muchmuch faster.

I also tested having breakfast before riding.

    What?

    Yeah, true.

I usually wake up at the last second and eat as soon as I start riding.

This morning, I was so excited I woke with tons of time.

    A full hour.

I fired up a bowl of oatmeal,
    dropped in frozen blueberries,
plus macadamia nuts for some fat.

    It stayed down great.

Shocking given the hideous zone too-dang-fast we were pushing.

Definitely going to try that again because I felt really good.

    That's it...

... hope your weekend is epic.

    HOW DO YOU STACK UP?

BEING A COMMITTED ATHLETE pays all kinds of dividends.  Which is cool. What's cooler is deconstructing what we do and...

... seeing how we stack up.

    Not against each other.

    Just riding
    or running
    or swimming

    won't do it.

    For example, we also...

    • Eat
    • Sleep
    • Maintain our equipment
    • Study the latest info
    • Might have a coach
    • Make sure we have proper fit of all our gear
    • Fine tune our body mechanics
    • Get as aero as possible
    • Test hardware
    • Train with other committed athletes
    • Challenge ourselves, long and short-term
    • Have our "day jobs" squared away and thriving
    • Prioritize family and friends

... and all that plus a lot more stacks,
    compounds and
    combines.

What can we add, refine, improve so we are truly...

... Ready To Rip On RaceDay.

    ...

By the way, I'm getting ready to launch dog tags with one of our sayings on one side and personal info on the other.

Would you like to know when they are ready?

    IN A MOOD FOR VIOLENCE

IT'S BEEN JUST OVER TWO MONTHS since being able to start training after my mishap.  Prior to that, it was 6 weeks off the bike or anything but walking...

    ... my fitness was zip.

    Why do base at all?

Because I was effectively starting from zero.

Sure, I had decades of consistent riding, running, etc.  But, I couldn't just jump right back into it.

I needed to give my body a break...

... and a chance to recalibrate.

    It's been fun.

I've been able to do some group rides...

... hanging on, then getting dropped.

Base training is good for that, for building the aerobic engine.

It's not good for putting a sting into our efforts...

    ... or responding in kind.

    That only comes from...

    • Intervals
    • Racing

    ... there's no other way.

The racing could be the kind where we pin a number on, spicy group rides, or getting after PRs.

The intervals, well there's a million ways to flog ourselves doing those.

    In short,
we gotta do the explosive efforts.

    There's no way around it.

    It's not for everyone.

Only those who want to find out what they're really capable of.

Me, I'm targeting two days a week for the carnage.

    Tuesdays.
    Saturdays.

The key to success will be...

... showing up fresh, in a mood for violence.

    JUST BELIEVE THIS ONE FACT

THERE ARE ALL KINDS OF THEORIES:  The Big Bang, Evolution, Creationism, even The Simulation.  No matter which one, if any, you subscribe to...

    ... one fact remains.

This body is the only one we got.

I dunno why people treat 'em so badly.

Heck I've done plenty of bad myself.

But, there's nothing like racing to keep me on track.

    Even just racing myself,
    my times.

    No matter what your beliefs...

... these bodies do their best when we eat clean.

Of course, there are a million beliefs on what that entails.

    I keep it simple.

    • No processed foods
    • As much fresh veggies and berries as possible
    • Plenty of protein
    • Plenty of water

That's my belief of what actually works...

    ... and I think it's a fact.

Because every day we are building our bodies, it's important to remember...

    ... Every Day Is RaceDay.

    WITH ALL THY FITNESS, GET...

IS THERE MORE TO RACING, than racing?  Well, yeah.  Of course.  A lot more, the only question is are we taking advantage of the opportunities.  As the wise one said...

... With all thy fitness, get adventurous.

By that, I don't mean in a racy way.

The point is to go somewhere,
    do something new,
    unattempted.

    We've got the fitness,
which too few people actually have,
so we can accomplish what most cannot fathom to attempt.

    So, what's it gonna be...

    • Ride across the country
    • Travel to a remote destination
    • Run the Grand Canyon rim to rim
    • Go from hut to hut in Colorado

    ... pick something.

    What's holding us back...

    • A tour guide
    • Language barriers
    • Support in case things go wrong

... nothing that can't be solved.

    Do it.

    H0W ARE THEY SO EXPLOSIVE?

OK, WE GET IT THAT PROS ARE FASTER.  Right?  But, how they heck are they so explosive without racing?  Asking for a friend, myself, and...

... anybody forced to train alone.

    We gotta know.

    • Personally, I enjoy the solitude.
    • Others don't near other riders or group rides
    • And, then there's those who's with uncooperative schedules

How are the outstanding pros doing it?

    Not racing,
showing up and slaughtering their competition.

    Intervals?

Well, personally I can't stand intervals for more than a few weeks without...

... wanting to take a hammer to my bike computer.

Riding and racing with the teammates?

That makes a little more sense, but only a little.  Who wants to drill or get drilled by their trusted allies?

    Way more rested?

Mmmmmaybe the non-racing leads to a more rested and ready body?

    Healthier?

Because they aren't traveling so much:

    • They aren't picking up colds and flues.
    • They aren't eating whatever they can find.
    • They aren't taking such large risks as when racing

    E-racing?

Are they just getting on a trainer and duking it out with the online competition?   If they are, don't they need to have fake profiles for privacy as well as less fitness?

    Virtual racing?

Setting up race course segments on Strava and trying to beat the PRs?

    I dunno, for me...

... ain't nothing like the real thing.

GETTING PUSHED AROUND IN THE GROUP

THE RIDE WAS GETTING SPICEY.  The pace increasing considerably, and the terrain going from flat to sawtooth.  The legs were screaming, and...

... and I was moving backwards.

    Then, it happened.

Just before the apex of quick power climb,
just when I needed it most...

... my pal, The Gambler, gave me some pedal assist.

Yep, he had the gaul to put his paws on my lycra and pushed me some.

    And I loved it.

It was just the right amount
    to keep me on.

Sly enough I quietly thought and hoped...

    ... Maybe nobody noticed.

    That's thing about needing help.

When we could really use some,
    we don't ask.

Good givers, like The Gambler, don't ask...

    ... the just give.

Without making a big deal about it.

    SHOULD WE LEARN TO TUMBLE?

LIKE MOST OF US, we have a group of regular riders.  So far, 3 of the 10 of us have broken bones this year.  One hit a tree skiing, one crossed wheels today...

... and, well, you know my saga.

I was off the back over the top,
and rolled up on the mishap.

    If you're a real rider,
    you've broken your collar bone.

    Ok, I don't know if that's 100% true.

    But, I have broken one,
    while riding.

    So, it's common.

    And I gotta ask...

... Should we take tumbling lessons?

    Would it help?

Would it keep us from doing the natural thing vs...

    ... rolling out of danger?

    Maybe, sometimes.

    Not a guarantee,
    perhaps a skill worth...

    • learning
    • practicing
    • investigating

IS THIS THE BEST RIDE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA?

IMAGINE A RIDE THAT FEATURES all the beauty and wonder of Southern California.  The beaches, the shaded prairies, the tall forests with ski runs...

... covering all of it in a single day.

    Oh, and almost no traffic.

    Impossible you say.

    Not.

    100% possible.

It took us years to scout it.

Here are some pics from 2023... route below.

    Here's the route: https://www.strava.com/routes/3216181932420212282

    It's 120 miles, 15000' of climbing.

We start at Doheny State Beach and wind up in Big Bear, refueling at convenience stores and restaurants along the way.

It's almost all dirt most to Corona, then a 35-mile bike trail across the Inland Empire.  At the bottom of the mountains, we jump on an abandoned logging road, and it's nearly all dirt to the top, and down into Big Bear.

    Epic.

    Insanely epic.

Some of the FAQ's from a Zoom call yesterday.

    Logistics:

          1.    Where to stay Friday Night?  Dinner plans?  Stay as close as you can to Dana Point, where we start… it’s only a few minutes drive to my house.  We’ll have dinner at my place and go over last minute specifics.

          2.    Ride start time?  Official Start is 6am, I highly recommend slower riders leave earlier to make sure we all get to Colton at the same time for the flat 35 miles across the Inland Empire – much easier in a group.

          3.    Where can we store bags? My van… Susie will drive it to Big Bear.

          4.    Confirm - unsupported?  Any plan B options for repairs, crashes, etc.? It’s self-supported, be prepared.

                a. Anyone we can hire to assist?  Is there a way to transport overnight bag? Susie will drive it to Big Bear.

          5.    Big Bear

                a. Anyone staying the night?  TBD on this.

                b. Transporation back to Orange County?  TBD on this.  Some ride back, some Uber back.  We need a final head count.

          5.    Snow blocking trails? Currently yes, but it’s getting warmer and it’s a south facing climb, we should be fine.

    People

          1.    How many people are coming and their capabilities?  Unknown, people always commit and don’t show, others never commit and just show up.

                a. We are locomotives not goats:).  Likelihood of creating riding groups of different speeds (any forecasted pacing / finish times)? For sure start early, and KNOW HOW TO UPLOAD A ROUTE to your device.  Any regrouping points?  One for sure, in Colton at a convenience store… depending on pace, we might all meet up at Seven Oaks restaurant about 1/3 up the climb… some of us will do some extra climbing and single track at end of 35 mile bike trail, others will go straight to the climb, which is why we might end up there at roughly same time.

    Nutrition

          1.    Where are the nutrition and water stops? ONeil Park is about 2 hours in, a campground with water and bathrooms.  Do NOT dillydally at any stops.  Next stop is Colton, about 4 hours away.  These are my estimates for your speed.

          2.    Water stops on the final climb or is two bottles sufficient? At Seven Oaks restaurant, we can get water, soda, hamburgers, fries… depending on heat, 2-3 bottles.  My bike holds 3.

          3.    Nutrition recommendations? 300-400 calories per hour.  Whatever you like and sits well in your stomach. I like CarboRocket, 333 calories/bottle.

    Equipment

          1.    Tire recommendation? I am running Continental Terra Speed 45s, with 32lbs in the rear, 28 in the front.  Lots and lots of sealant before we roll.

What are the gravel sections like? Pretty nice, a little more rutted from rain run-off, but totally 100% ridable and fun.  There’s a little single track where trail is currently flooded close to the start.

          2.    Other gear that would be helpful (e.g. hydration pack, lights). Lights for sure, early start, and maybe a late finish.  Be able to carry 3 large bottles worth of water. Get a BLACK  mosquito net, bugs can be nasty… we learned the hard way that the white nets reflect light which was blinding as the sun was setting.

                    3.            Clothing recommendations?  (Temp change to expect)?  May is a tricky month, I’ll carry my KOM Jacket which is great for wind and water and small enough to go in my Barrito Bag … my bike will have a Barrito for the KOM jacket, and food and drink mix supplies in my Day Ripper bag.  Only other item I’d carry would be arm warmers… but highly unlikely we’ll need them.  My Wahoo died 30 minutes from the top… bring a battery booster.

ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH TO BE...

I POLLED THE RIPPERS and 100% of them lift weights or do resistance exercise year round.  Well, I was shocked by that.  I had no idea if we rubbing off on each other...

    ... just hope.

In the beginning, after our first day with real weight, we often echo the great Cheryl Crow song...

... God, I feel like hell tonight.

    Why do it?

    • Strong bones
    • Good posture
    • Improved ability to handle challenges

    Why not?

    • Takes time
    • Potential to get hurt

    Here's my current program,
    takes about 15 minutes.

    • 6 pullups
    • 18 pushups
    • 10 shoulder press
    • 5 pullups
    • 15 pushups
    • 6 squats
    • 4 pullups
    • 12 pushups
    • 20 toe raises, 10 heel raises
    • 3 pullups
    • 9 pushups
    • 10 curls (vanity muscles)
    • 2 pullups
    • 6 pushups

In other words, mainly pullups and pushups with something extra to break up the sets.

The focus is on large muscle groups.

In Natural Born Heroes: Mastering the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance, there's a strong emphasis on tendon strength being key to true athlete prowess.  We develop that moving heavy weight with large muscle groups...

... the stuff we need to be fast.

    For the bar...

    • Jump up to the bar, and let yourself down slowly.
    • Use a pullup assist machine
    • Giant rubberbands

    For pushups...

    • Figure out hand positions that are comfy on the shoulders
    • It's cool to start on your knees

    Squats...

    • Do air squats and put that arse in the grarsse
    • Go half way down

    Start somewhere,
    just start.

    HOW TO OVERCOME INJURY

I'VE BEEN ASKED TWICE TODAY if I had any feelings of Why me? after my brain injury.  And, how did I overcome that?  Well, good questions because...

... we all gotta battle through the shiz.

During the darkest days, I only had one thought.

    How can I fix this?

We've all been dealt multiple bad hands over the years, and if we think about it...

... we often come through them stronger, better.

It never seems like it at the time.

Our challenges, I believe, are our challenges, for a reason.

    As rotten as they appear...

    ... they are personalized gifts.

If they weren't for our benefit and didn't totally suck,
    they'd be easy to overcome,
    requiring little effort,
    personal growth,
    or change.

With that in mind, I set about studying and researching how best to recover from this unplanned set back.

There's plenty of improvement still to be made...

... and that's exciting as hell!

    GIMME SHELTER

THERE AIN'T NOTHING LIKE A TAILWIND to blow the group to pieces.  The palms were bending, for sure...

... this one was gonna hurt.

    It's counter intuitive.

    But, it goes like this.

    Alone, a tailwind feels nice.

A chance to tap lightly on the pedals and fly along.

In a group, it's whole different game.

The strong go to the front and drill it.

    'problem is, there's no draft,
    no place to hide,
    no rest.

Which is exactly how it went down today.

    Three of us were rotating.

    Hard pulls.

    It felt terrible,
    and great.

    Nobody else was pulling through.

    I didn't blame 'em,
    it was hard as heck.

    I glanced back...

    ... gap was 30 feet.

    Then 300 feet.

Then, a slight bend in the road,
an every so tiny gap opened, and...

    ... I was ejected.

    Just couldn't close it.

    No draft.

How was the ride back up the coast into the wind?

Well, alone it woulda been a bear.

    In the group, much easier.

Sure the brief moment pulling through stung a bit, then...

... it was right back to the shelter.

    So, there you have it.

Tailwind, get on the front and get a gap.

Headwind, take it easy, nothings getting away.

    DO LESS, AND OBSESS

CAN'T GET THIS CONCEPT OUTTA MY MIND, not because I've never considered it, because it's so darn rhymey. I coudn't say it better...

    ... Do less, and obsess.

Maybe I just needed to hear the message?

The idea of having 1 (one) 'A' race a year has always turned me on...

    • It's more fun to have one focus
    • dive into the nittygritty
    • get granular
    • geek out

    ... that's the shift I love.

Yeah, I might end up with a bike that's not good for much but a particular course,
training that is so specialized as to be worthless for everything else.

    But, that's the point.

    To be so singular,
    to be uniquely prepared.

Then, and only then, I might have a chance...

... and that's all the hope I need.

When I'm that locked in, it's easy to treat...

... all other races as distractions at best.

    Places to test...

    • equipment
    • strategy
    • training

    ... nothing more.

When I'm that locked in, it's easy to commit...

... to training blocks and weight lifting.

When I'm that locked in, it's easy to see...

    ... the big picture.

    To do less,
    and obsess.

AN OBSERVATION ON UNEVEN POWER BETWEEN LEGS

ONE OF THE SETTINGS ON MY POWER METER shows the power put out by each leg.  It can def ovewhelm for an entire ride, because we can...

... freak out about data we don't like.

It's on one of my Wahoo screens.

I see it from time to time on a ride.

Consciously trying to even out the power was annoying the heck out of me.

One leg was always stronger, unless I reallyreallyreallyreally focused.

    Then, I had an idea.

    Something to try,
    that I used to do.

This came to me when I noticed standing and climbing,
    power was always 50/50.

    Hmmmm.

    What's the difference?

    Then I noticed,
same thing when it got steep and I really had to put out some power.

Well, that was nice to see...

    ... somewhat calming.

    Hmmmm...

... how to do that all the time?

Welp, this is just an observation.

It might not work for you.

Meter could be mismonitoring, but this makes all the difference in the world...

... when I consciously focus on pedaling with the heels down.

    What?

    Really?

    Yes.

What I think is happening is I'm eliminating a dead spot along the top of my pedal stroke...

... gonna verify with my genius bike fitter, Ashley.

THE WHAT AND WHY OF A PROPER EZ SPIN

I'VE BEEN TRYING TO GET THE LEGS TO COME AROUND, which means I had to actually dedicate myself to do some easy spins.  Because, like most of us it's just...

... darn hard to go easy.

    Or, is it just me?

First off, what constitutes an easy spin?

    Two things:

    • Low effort
    • High rpm's

    How low?

Very bottom of Zone 2, or anything in Zone 1.

    How high?

    90-100+ rpm's.

    Why?

Well, one of my early coaches called it a Rinse Ride for a reason.

If we are really doing it correctly,
our legs feel all clean and springy because...

... we rinsed out the crud.

    Why else?

    • It's good on the brain
    • Takes the pressure off, simply relaxing
    • Great time to catch up with friends and chat while spinning

    How long?

    45-90 min seems about right.

The things we think about when we're just spinnin' ez.

EVER HAD THE CRUD BEAT OUT OF YOU, FOR REAL?

GROWING UP, we fought a lot.  We were too weak to do much physical damage, but there was plenty of pride and shame on the line.  It's not much different now...

    ... when we race.

If we truly get the crud beat out us by...

    • the course
    • the competition
    • our worse, ourselves

... there is only one question.

Did we really get it beat out of us?

Or, are we destined to get pummeled over and over again because...

... the crud is still there?

    Is our diet a joke?

Do our handling skills still stink?

Does our bike squeak and wobble?

'Cause if that crud is still there, then...

... it's not beat out of us.

We've just learned to live with mediocrity...

... and that's just plain cruddy.

IS IT TIME TO CONSIDER ROAD PEDALS FOR OFFROAD?

WHEN I WAS PRE-RIDING LEADVILLE a while back, the phenom who would shatter the course record floated by me as I labored.  He made it look so easy...

    ... was it the pedals?

    99% of MTB racers,
    dismount on that course.

There is no way they'd sport road shoes and pedals,
    even though they are...

    • Lighter
    • More aero
    • Offer better contact and efficiency

... because once fouled they're VERY difficult to get engaged.

    Gravel,
    is another deal.

Unless we are pushing the boundaries,
    ripping single track,
    slaloming sand...

... we're not going to dismount.

The only time would be if crashed,
or unclipped to rutter a turn.

    In most gravel races,
    that's not likely.

So, should we run the road set up offroad?

I have multiple friends who roll the dice in local XC races...

... and even the long, epic stuff.

It almost always works out great.

    Worth the risk?

    Up to you.

    Worth testing?

    100%.

HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TRAINING BIG BLOCKS?

A QUESTION CAME UP LAST NIGHT ON OUR ZOOM CALL.  Have you ever trained big training blocks like Keegan Swenson just posted.  Good question...

    ... does it work?

    Maybe.

Here's what I can tell you from personal experience.

18 months ago, I was prepping for my insane time goal at Leadville.

    I was really committed.

Holed up in Breckinridge all by myself,
    for the month prior.

It's easy to be selfish with the time,
    when you're by yourself.

    The race is in August.

    In July, I did..

    • 20 hours
    • 22 hours
    • 25 hours

... a lot more than my normal 10-12 hours a week.

It was very race specific training.

    Lots of Zone 2.

    Recovery
    was key.

I came out of that in awesome shape,
    and had the best race
    of
    my
    life.

    Does it work for everybody?

    I have no idea.

But, I'll definitely do it again when prepping for a once in a life quest.

    THINGS TO CHECK FIRST...

THERE ARE A FEW THINGS THAT CAN MAKE OR BREAK a race, the chief being the bike.  Bikes don't win races, but they sure can make things a lot harder...

    ... or a lot easier.

As I went through my checklist, I found a few issues:

    • Rear brake pad smoked
    • Sealant dried out
    • Battery low

It's kinda nice to have brakes that work, especially with a ripping downhill like Saturday's.

The course should be in pretty good shape, but that doesn't mean a small wire or piece of glass couldn't be a day-ender without sealant.

    And c'mon...

... ya can't ride these modern bikes without good batteries.

And, I'm not just talking about the derailleur batteries.  Many of the shifters have their own small batteries.

I have made the mistake of not checking the shifter batteries.

Heck, I didn't even know about them until the start of the Filthy 50 a couple of years ago.  I didn't warm up, just saddled up and headed to the start.

Typically MTB XC start... everybody pinned to get to the single track first...

    ... I got there last.

Shifter was dead, I was spun out and then spit out.

15 minutes later, with some help from the mechanic on site, I was back at it.

Which is exactly why I came up with the RaceDay Bike Checklist, and made it into a sticker.

    https://pedalindustries.com/products/raceday-ready™-checklist-stickers

For about a year now we've been shipping the stickers out with each RaceDay Bag purchase.  They're great for tool boxes and benches.

    THE HEROIC MOVE

THERE'S A LOT OF GREAT RACING GOING ON.  Locally, regionally, internationally.  Sometimes we witness the unfathomable attack from impossibly far out, other times...

... a second or third wind, for the win.

    By inches.

    We shouldn't be impressed.

    I'm mean,
    it's cool.

    We all cheer.

But the truth is the victory was secured long ago.

    When nobody was cheering.

    It was dark,
    lonely,
    cold.

The alarm was more drill sergeant, than fan.

    In those moments...

... the heroes make their moves.

    If we're lucky,
    we witness the results.

IT'S LIKE THE SUN GOING UP ON ME

40 DEGREES, 80% HUMIDITY ain't nothing.  Combine that with a dawn start, the sun hidden behind the hills, and, well, when you're going 20+ mph in your underpants...

    ... it's bonechilly.

I left the knee warmers behind.

    No vest.
    No jacket.

    Just arm warmers,
    a base layer,
    skull cap.

    It's risky,
    we might freeze,
this is how we do it...

... when we know sunny times are ahead.

    So are they?

Whether we are enjoying the longer days,
    recovering from an injury,
    just getting back at it...

... we hope and plan for...

    • better fitness
    • decreased fatness
    • all things to improve

    ... it's a process.

    And, we know it.

Just like the sun coming up,

we imperceptibly rise to the occasion.

That's how today was for me.

    Still got dropped,
but made it a little further.

    I'll take it.

Here's a snapshot of where things stand.

There's nothing like a good fitness journey.

    MY DUMBEST PREDICTION YET

PARIS-ROUBAIX IS SUNDAY.  I can't wait.  It's always so fun to watch, and such a battle of machine, mind, and bike handling.  Lots of drama, and this year...

... is starts before the famed Arenberg Forest.

    The forest is always crazy.

    Mud.

    Cobbles.

A massive battle for the front ensues for those who want the best chance of getting through with the lead group...

    ... unscathed.

This year, the organizers decide a chicane right before entering the forest would be a good idea.

    Less dangerous.

    I looked at the layout.

    Here's my prediction.

Rather than racing for the forest entrance to avoid carnage...

... they will race to the chicane.

    And...

    • have plenty of lycra on the pavement.
    • or in the barriers
    • or both.

    ... I hope I'm wrong.

Then, we have to wonder, at least I do, what is the point of racing?

Call me crazy, but I think part of it is to show bike handling prowess.

We're still gonna see it with the chicane.

Just seems like a little chicanery...

    ... to appease, who?

    BLOOD. WORK.

DON'T BE LIKE ME.  Because I never get sick, I never go to the doctor.  Which meant I never had my blood work done.  You're too smart for that...

    ... here's why.

By regularly getting the blood work done, we have a baseline for "our" normal.

    I don't have that.

When I had the brain injury a few months ago,
    things changed.

The brain is our command center, telling the body what to produce and control and do, etc.

A brain injury often causes issues with how the body is regulated.

Today, we reviewed my blood work which was drawn a few weeks ago.

Some markers are out of range - too high on some, too low on others.

    Bad news is...

... I have no reference point of "my" normal.

Could be genetic, could be from the injury.

    Good news is...

... we know where I'm at, and have some corrective measures to take.

Bonus, most indicators are positive for my body, and with my overall health.

Dr. Cory King, my functional health doctor from Encinitas, went over it all with me.

    Nothing too scary...

... but definitely areas to not ignore.

Things like cholesterol levels, vitamin levels, etc. that can have negative effects if left untreated.

So, we'll chock this up as another blessing from my brain injury.

    Regardless of your awesome health.

Find out where you are at,
    things can probably be improved.

Consider this a gentle and loving nudge from me to you...

... get the blood work done.

    CHEAT CODE

HERE'S A DIRTY LITTLE SECRET.  Okay, maybe it's not all that dirty but it is secret and fact is it's...

... a cheat code for life.

There's a reason we get out and do our thing.

Sure, it's great to be in shape.

Have that come what may attitude.

Fact is, even though the fitness is great...

    ... there's something better.

    • The problems we solve
    • Ideas we come up with
    • Freedom to think

    We often, nearly always, return...

    ... renewed.

    Ready

    To

    Kicka$$

    Even when,
    especially when...

... we've rung out our body's energy supply.

    STRUGGLING WITH WEIGHT... TRY NOT

SINCE MY AWESOME START TO THE YEAR, knocking myself out and spending a 5 days in ICU, my metabolism has changed.  This is not uncommon, given the standard protocols...

    ... and now I'm pissed.

I didn't ask for this, and that is not the problem.

    I haven't asked for a solution.

I have forgotten my own wisdom.

Well, on the eve of my bday, yesterday, I was asked...

    ... What do you want?

Get my lycracovered buns back in fighting shape.

I went to bed with a question...

... How do I get back to my normal, leanish self?

I woke up with an answer.

A book recommendation appeared on my Kindle.

Feast., Fast. Fit. by Fred Duncan.

It wasn't new information for me.

    Heck, I preach it.

    It's worked in the past.

I believe it will work again.

    The lesson?

It isn't get on the diet train...

... it's ask the right questions,
    and expect answers.

    • How can I get lean?
    • How can I climb faster?
    • How can I stay cool in the blistering heat?
    • How can I complete a century without bonking?
    • How can I reduce the drag created by my bike and body?

    Try not.

    Ask or ask not.

THOU SHALT CARE FOR THY HANDS

TAKING CARE OF THE HANDS is importante.  Road, is pretty straight forward.  So is MTB.  Gravel, well, it's got it's own challenges...

    ... what can we do?

I've seen plenty of ruined hands...

    • brutal gripshift blisters
    • palms filled with asphalt gravelly stuff
    • a thumb's skin pealed from under the nail past the first knuckle

... all of it could have been spared with gloves.

Personally, I prefer very lightweight fullfinger gloves.

But, that ain't gonna help on the gravel bike.

    No suspension.

    What can we do?

I double wrap my bars with a good soft tape.

    • helps with vibration
    • displaces pressure points across a wider area

I was reminded of how great this is just last week.

It'd been a while since I'd ridden the roadie, been riding the gravel bike on and off road a ton.

As soon as I got going the bars felt weird.

    Sharp.

Oh yeah, the single wrap bar.

    It's lighter.

    More aero.

But, I'd never go back to a single wrap on the gravel bike.

    WHICH NUMBERS ARE WE CHASING?

THERE'S A BIG DIFFERENCE between the kinds of numbers some of us focus on putting up.  Some chase big power numbers, while others chase small numbers...

    ... what's the corresponding motivation?

    You know.

Are we more interested in the low numbers: 1st, 2nd, 3rd...

... or, increasing our own personal power numbers?

Do we need everybody to see us on the podium...

... or, are we thrilled when we privately snag a new PR?

We can go out to the race,
or we can design our own incredible adventure.

We can train to beat everybody,
or our training can help us live our best lives.

    They're not necessarily mutually exclusive,

IS IT TIME TO STOP BINGING?

SATURDAYS ARE MY DAYS.  All week long, I look forward to getting up early and rolling out with no particular plan but wasting time via hours in the saddle...

... I call it binge riding.

    Not today.

    It was raining

When that happens on the 6th day of the week,
    my day,
    I'm typically grumpy.

    This time,
I was looking forward to it.

    Why?

Honestly, I'd been binge riding too much.

Too many days in a row spent
    slipping out after work
    staying out too long...

... the time change being my enabler.

I was unconsciously due for a break.

    Some call it overtrained...

    SOMETIMES I JUST WONDER

    Feb 01, 2018 TODD BROWN

ON MY RIDE I OVERHEARD THIS:  If you die, I'll go through your pockets.
How do you get to that point in your life, living on the streets, undernourished and suffering in the cold, surrounded by your "friends", who's best idea is a statement like that?
Three grown men... who were once someone's little boys.
Two trying to console a one, clearly struggling.
All doing their best to survive.
    Am I any different?

WHY IS A MASS START SO AWESOME... AND GROUNDBREAKING?

WHY IS A MASS START SO AWESOME... AND GROUNDBREAKING?

    Jan 31, 2018 TODD BROWN

A MASS START BIKE RIDE OR RACE IS AWESOME, because it's so much more of a shared experience.

The energy when everybody starts lining up in their respective corrals is off the charts.  Every single person can feel it, and you just get the idea that this is going to be a great day... that today could be your best ever HUNKR time.

We are all competing under the same conditions.  This is cool because it gives us all a good idea of how we truly compare.  For the slower people, it's a chance to appreciate the speed of the pros.  For the pros, it's a chance to witness the heroic efforts of the first timers... to be a real pro at the finish and welcoming them to the party.

It's like the best group ride ever: we time it and make sure you don't have to stop along the way so you can go after your PR.

The after party kicks in as we all arrive back at the start.  There's great food and music, and cool exhibits to check out.  Because we all start together, we get back to the finish about the same time as our friends and hang out and recover.  What could be better?

Bonus: it makes the driving so much better when we can carpool with our friends.  The animated chatter on the way over is sprinkled with laughter and big bets.  But, it's the drive home, reliving the highlights of the day that are the best... the way we take it all apart, congratulate each other and get right at planning how do better next time.

    ---

At HUNKR, you'll be starting at the same time as everybody else.  Everybody lines up based on their projected finish time - our supercrazypowerful software makes sure everybody is where they should be.

    PUSH IT REAL GOOD

    PUSH IT REAL GOOD

    Jan 30, 2018 TODD BROWN

MY PLAN WAS PRETTY SIMPLE THIS MORNING... push it, push it, push it.  I was tapered from last week, other than Saturday's leg busting effort at SBRR.  I have 3 weeks till the next big race, this week's gotta be a humdinger.

    It's a selfish plan.

I say that because we get to the start warmed up and ready to broil - it's 45 minutes with 1000' of elevation on the way over.  We made really good time today, which surprised me because it seemed easy.  As soon as 6:30 hit, it was haulin' A', like DK.  We had 4 guys off for the first 10 minutes.  The remnants caught us.  It slowed, and we pushed it again.  About 1/3 of the group was bye-bye.

    Sorry.

The A-Loop was somewhat tame.  Still, the ponies were jumpy and anxious.  They eased just a little on the pinnacle, so I pushed it.  Pushed it good enough to crest first (Sean mighta let up?).

    Thank you.

We kept it together down the DMZ to the bike trail.  As soon as we hit the trail, I pushed it.  OTF for about 10ish minutes.  Got the gap up to 23 seconds, per MikeyG.  The herd of ponies galloped right on by on The Wall.  But, I kept pushing.

    Almost.

We almost caught the remnants of the leaders, only because we kept pushing it.  Pushed down the canyon, and kept on pushing up the Corkscrew.  Mission accomplished.  I'm smoked.

    Pushed it!

    FROM WHERE I SIT

    FROM WHERE I SIT

    Jan 29, 2018 TODD BROWN

ARCHED BACKS ON YOGA MATS ,
    cross-legged squatters perched high,
a sleeping man holding down his bench.

Cruising the bike path, there are all kinds of peeps up early.  At daybreak.  As I pedal, many of them are still.  Quiet.  Meditating perhaps.  Maybe reflecting on yesterday, wondering what today holds.  I'm doing the same as I ease by, but it's really not the same.

    So I stop and admit,
    it's pretty good
    to just sit.

    HUNKR TRAINING RIDE #4

    HUNKR TRAINING RIDE #4

    Jan 27, 2018 TODD BROWN

TODAY WAS THE SANTA BARBARA COUNTY ROAD RACE, and I was totally unprepared for what happened.  I mean, there was a race.  I was prepared for that.  I made the move I thought would work and, well... it worked out pretty darn good.  It was the rest of the day I was unprepared for.

After months of only seeing a large chunk of my friends on the interwebs, there they were.

    In person.
    It was great.

We were all hugging and fist bumping... and elbowing?  Yeah, Mr Universe said Don't touch me so we elbowed.  It was so good to see people in the flesh.  Look 'em in the eyes, and see their souls.  Real friends, real people.  Well wishes of good luck sloshed about, then did our best to kill each other.

... there is a training message coming, bear with me...

After the bike race, and after the love fest I hustled south to get to the Simple Green team night at RockNRoad.  Mike Okano invited me over to make a presentation to the team regarding HUNKR.  Which I did with as much gusto as possible after healthy bike race and 4+hours of driving in traffic.

Things broke up and a familiar face with a few more lines etched in said... Todd, it's really you! Yep, but... It's Jeff NewmanOh my gosh, JEFF!  Now this was whole other love fest.

Jeff and I used to ride and race pre-kids, maybe pre-marriage.  Back when Coffee Crew was the most badass Saturday ride... we'd crush each other up the coast with Schooler and Stricky and Newman and Salzman and Tessman and Miller and Kurzenski and Lyle and Pellkofer and GINA and even Linda Brenneman just hitting it and hitting it and hitting it until we got to Corona Del Mar and collapsed at C'est Si Bon.

What I wasn't prepared for today,
    Was seeing so many friends,
    Young and aged,
    New and old.
    Get ready folks,
    Be prepared to connect,
And reconnect with our awesome tribe at HUNKR,
    'cause everbody'll be there.

    THE OTHER HALF

    THE OTHER HALF

    Jan 26, 2018 TODD BROWN

I ALWAYS WANTED TO RACE LIKE THIS.  My buddy Todd said Let's go in the RV. So here we are, camped out in the middle of nowhere.  At the Start/Finish.  It's so nice.  The RV is huge.  It's dead quite out here.  While all the other guys are driving up late, staying in hotels, hustling over to the start... we are resting and sleeping and relaxing.

As my dad would say, So this is how the other half lives.
    I like this half.

    OH THOSE PHONE CALLS!

    OH THOSE PHONE CALLS!

    Jan 25, 2018 TODD BROWN

THE FIRST CALL CAME AT 8:07AM THIS MORNING.

Hi, it's Big Dog.  I'm just checking in with you.  Saw you signed up for Santa Barbara.  Wanted to see if we're going to work together or just go head to head or what... you know.  Because you know me... I'd rather have a break.  I'll tell you right now, DougieD is probably the strongest guy I know right now and he's 100%.  So, just want to see what your strategy is... call me.

Wow!  That's quite a message.  Intel, strategy, teaming up.

Next call was from JackMack.  We were talking biz about 10am.

You going to Vail this weekend, to do the MTB endurance races.  No, I'm heading to Santa Barbara for the rare road race.  You're one tough lady to race 6 hours... that's so hard.  It's not that bad, we only get 5 laps in and I go 2nd... Barb has to do 3 laps.  Go get 'em.  I will, just wanna have fun.

    TD checked in around 1pm.

So what's the plan?  Breakaway together would be fun.  I know, I'd love that too.  But, it's risky.  A better plan might be...

Emails and texts peppered the day.  New guys, like Legal Eagle, askin: What should I do today and tomorrow?  What should I eat day of... all these questions that never arise before our weekly Saturday "social rides", which are way harder than his Cat V race will be.  He'll be fine, has no idea he's already riding at a very high level.

The last was Frosty, swingin' by to pick up a canopy.  Me n Gonzer are racing the 2 man at Vail.  You two will kill it. That's the plan.  Have fun.  Always.

    It's race time,
    make your calls.

    GOOD HEARTED WOMEN

    Jan 24, 2018 TODD BROWN

COUNT YOURSELF BLESSED IF YA GET ONE OF THESE

A long time forgotten are dreams that just fell by the way
The good life he promised ain't what she's living today
But she never complains of the bad times or bad things he's done, Lord
She just talks about the good times they've had and all the good times to come

    She's a good-hearted woman in love with a bike-ridin' man
She loves him in spite of his ways that she don't understand
Through teardrops and laughter, they'll pass through this world hand-in-hand,
A good-hearted woman loving her bike riding man

He likes the long rides, road trips with bike ridin' friends
When the ridin's all over she'll welcome him back home again
Lord knows she don't understand him, but she does the best that she can
'Cause she's a good-hearted woman; she loves her bike ridin' man

    She's a good-hearted woman in love with a bike-ridin' man
She loves him in spite of his ways that she don't understand

    THE NON-COMMITAL KILLER

    Jan 23, 2018 TODD BROWN

I NEVER WORRY ABOUT PHRASES LIKE "I'M FEELING GREAT" OR "I'M FEELING TERRIBLE", it's We'll see how it goes that scares me.

I'm feeling great and I'm feeling terrible are either telling the truth or lying and it's pretty easy to tell which one within a few pedal strokes.

We'll see how it goes is a whole other story.  That rider has a plan, and he's not letting on any more than he needs to.  He's going to wait and wait and wait then pounce for the kill.

Not that there's anything wrong with that,
I'll just sit back and see how it goes.

1 IF BY CAR, 2 IF BY BIKE

I SEE SO MUCH TRAVELING BY BIKE, so much more than by car.
    By car things whiz by,
    But by bike,
there's more life to take in,
    other riders,
    early joggers,
    homeless souls,
    and grassy parks,
    windswept alleys,
    empty sands,
    artistic grafitti,
    things that need fixin'
    Cars are for far,
    and bikes are for close,
and all those times I need a dose
    of what matters most.

HUNKR TRAINING RIDE #3 - RESPECTING THE YOUNGERS

HUNKR TRAINING RIDE #3 - RESPECTING THE YOUNGERS

    Jan 20, 2018 TODD BROWN

OUR VERY SOUTH COUNTY POSSE IS POWERED BY A LOT OF YOUNG DADS.  So, MikeyG put together a solid-Gould route that would get our heroes home early to their youngins... lest their maidens revoke their SatPasses.

    We left on time, 7am.

Several riders missed the start by 2 minutes.  Could we have waited?  Yep.  Should we have? Nope.  We love these cats so much we want to train 'em up right... show up on time fellas.  (side note:  the tardy riders are all old dads).

With the young bucks pounding away on the front I slotted in like Santa out for a slay (sic) ride.  We picked up JParker and JWolf and the Lion King himself, PFetzer... damn! -> we might even make Laguna Beach Cyclery a waypoint if I can tap the dew off my lily there.

It was 10ºF in Laguna Canyon.  No sun.  Humid freeziness cutting to the bone. But, massive heat was being put out by The Bull.  This is the official "it's on" section... and it would stay on for just over an hour, to the official "it's off" finish.

Here is a secret HUNKR training tip:  60ish minutes of intensity with seven 2-6 minute efforts is a great way to get you battle ready.  It's interval training with carrots, a lot tastier than interval training alone.  On this ride, there's always someone ahead, to the side, or coming up from behind... unless you are The Bull or Bob Frosty.

    Halfway through:  Boom!

SDS' tire blew.  Should we have stopped?  Nope.  Did we?  I'm ashamed to admit it.  We stopped.  We never stop.  Why?  Because it's not good for the group to stop, and our allegiance is to the good of the group.  Plus, the youngsters gotta get to their youngins.

Too soon for me, we were chasing SDS up the final push (we shouln'ta stopped)to the stop sign at the top of Highland.  The plan is to re-group here, then soft pedal up PID and home.

Does this ride have a name?  Not one that's stuck:  Laguna Loop, Hour of Power, Power Hour, Dad Ride, Beach Cities Cruiser (Bruiser), Bone Yard Boys (if start at DoHo), Mike's Magical Mountain Tour... something'll stick.

What's the purpose of this ride?  ride early, ride hard.

I'm all for it... I used to get home a lot earlier.  Play with the littles... then ride with the littles when they got bigger.  Today it felt good to not be smashed after an 80 mile slog.  I even had enough energy to lift some weights, which is right in line with my anti-aging program...

I used to be a dad,
    well, I'm still a dad,
    but, I'm not.

My inner evil said Old Diesel! you got too much steam to be countin' on them weak single pivot binders.  You got to go all Lewis Hamilton when you're racin'.

    Boom.

I know the SRAM single-pivots match all the rest of the SRAM E-tap components.  But, out with them and their flimsy performance and in with the almightypowerfullest, double-pivot ShuhManO Durace. I mean, if you're going to build a monster make it as grotesque as possible, right?

IF RIDING BIKES IS NUMBER ONE...

IF RIDING BIKES IS NUMBER ONE...

    Jan 18, 2018 TODD BROWN

IF RIDING BIKES IS YOUR NUMBER ONE SPORT, what is number 2?

    In my heart, it's surfing.
    Based on time, it's walking/hiking.
Do great athletes even have a runner up sport?
I'm not sure, but I bet if they do it supports number one.
How does surfing help my bike riding?
I think it's really helpful for sprinting.  During the sprint, you have to notice what's going on in the pack... where is the energy? who is going to make move that matters?  When surfing, you focus if a set of waves is coming and where will they break.  When the set does start to take shape you cannot let on what your plan is to get that wave or you will be out maneuvered very quickly.  Same with a sprint, it's all about patience... letting the waves come to you and letting the sprint unfold before you.  Surfing also helps with mountain biking:  the balance, the flow and getting comfortable with weightlessness.
My other runner up, walking, is also supportive of my riding.
One, it's good to walk.  But, what I find to be tremendously enjoyable is to walk for an hour on the sand.  This is a great way to massage my feet and work those lower leg muscles and tendons.  Plus, apparently being grounded is a real thing... it actually is important that we get our feeties dirty.
My focus is still singular, and in multi-colored way.
    How 'bout you?
    What's your runner up?
    Why?

HEY TODD: HOW DO YOU DO IT?

HEY TODD: HOW DO YOU DO IT?

    Jan 17, 2018 TODD BROWN

I HEAR THIS A LOT:  MAN, I FORGOT HOW HARD THIS RIDE IS...  and it's always followed by How do you do it?

    Well, it's simple.
Ya see, I never stop doing it.

We've been doing TMWC for 15 years now.  Over that time, my overall time commitment to cycling has ebbed and flowed.  Family had a lot to do with how much riding I wanted to do.  But, for the most part, Tuesday morning has been my sacred Todd time.

This is my weekly check in with the gang - and I really love my riding pals.  We have a lot fun killing each other.  Plus, it's kept my diet somewhat honest or really sharp depending on goals and time.

Locking Tuesday in has given me a launch pad.  Some years I'm fast, some I'm slow. I've always got a base to go do a HUNKR or Leadville or CBR.

    So how we do it?
    We do it.
    We show up.
    We do the work.
We have fun while were at it.

    DID YOU GO TO NATIONALS?

    DID YOU GO TO NATIONALS?

    Jan 16, 2018 TODD BROWN

ANDY ASKED IF I WENT TO CX NATIONALS?

Heck no!  That's way too hard for me. I tried it once and it was terrible.  All the pain of XC MTB racing and none of the fun!

    Have you ever tried it?

    Yes... I'm a national champ.

... insert drop the mic image here...

Well, that shut me up.  So nice ol' Andy is a CX National Champ.  Who'd a guessed it?  Nothing personal Andy, but... one, you're too nice to breathe fire like CX racers; two, you used to race Vision Quest a long painful slog across the Santa Anas the opposite of CX's all out pace for 30 minutes; three....

CX is wildly popular with a very wild crowd.  It's 30-60 minutes of the most painful, relentless style of bike racing ever invented.  On a road bike.  And they hope for miserable conditions:  rain? sleet? snow?  BRING IT!

What does that say about Andy?
Not much... since he's a now a mountain bike race promoter.
Check out NonDot Adventures a super fun race series in OC Parks.

What does that say about me?
That I've tried every kind of bicycle racing at least once, or twice.
That I know what I like,
    I don't breathe fire,
    I prefer fun.
    It's fun to compete,
In the disciplines that fit my abilities
Ya gotta try all the flavors to know what you like.

    DREAMS ARE CHEAP

    DREAMS ARE CHEAP

    Jan 15, 2018 TODD BROWN

MLK DAY IS MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY.  I always go for a ride to ponder the hopes and dreams I have for my family and myself.

    But, dreams are cheap.
    They are nothing without courage.
    Courage can get you killed.
    Because real courage begets action.

As I rode along today, the courage Dr. King had to pursue such a massive dream stood out to me than ever.  Most years, it's been the details of his famous I Have A Dream speech.  He made it so real.  He knew it had the potential to come true, and what sharing that dream... pursuing that dream... would cost.  Yet, knowing the dangers of that dream, he moved forward.

How do I get that kind of courage?
    Commitment.

    HUNKR TRAINING RIDE #2

    HUNKR TRAINING RIDE #2

    Jan 13, 2018 TODD BROWN

TODAY'S  HUNKR "TRAINING" RIDE WAS A MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE.   If your strategy is to be race ready, then there's no better prep than racing.  But, you have to race with a purpose:

For example, going through the 48hr countdown to race start.  48 hours out your bike better be perfect.  24 hours out you can practice resting.  12 hours out, load your RaceDay Bag(tm) and place everything but your bike and drinks in the car.  Get to bed early, get up early, and arrive early.  If all goes well, you'll be early and if it doesn't you won't be stressing.  Perfecting the 48hr countdown is what pros do, especially the amateur pros like us.

Sizing up your competition is another reason.  Go to the race with the sole purpose of seeing how fit the others are. Throw down hard attack.  Who has legs?  Make notes, and cruise the rest of the race.

Racing is great for getting battle hardened.  Ride as aggressive as you can, really ruin yourself.  Then rest the following week or two before the race that matters.

Try different race tactics:  attacking off the front, sucking wheel till the final sprint, pushing hard and dropping people on the climbs, riding on the front in a stiff crosswind and leaving no place to draft, attacking with a huge tailwind.

It's a great way to perfect your food too.  What can you eat during a HUNKR?  How much fluid do you need?  How many calories?  Will you need more than two bottles?  What can you stash in your car to look forward to afterwards?

None of those was my reason, mine was two-fold... one, I needed a change of pace.  I've been doing long, 4-5 hour road rides every Saturday and a relatively short mountain bike race with some steep climbs and fun descending was just what the doctor ordered...

... but it was more than that,
    I tricked Surfergirl into coming,
Hey, do you want to go to Palm Desert Saturday?
    Yes!
Do you mind if we make a stop on the way?
    No.
It's always a good idea to practice getting a hall pass for race day.

     _____

Racing is alive and well in Fontana

Before the pain... MTB racing strategy is pretty simple, stay on your bike and pace yourself... neither of which I did very well today.

    STRATEGIES VS TACTICS

    STRATEGIES VS TACTICS

    Jan 13, 2018 TODD BROWN

BEING A GREAT CLIMBER IS A STRATEGY.
Attacking 3/4's of the way up a climb is a tactic.
Being a great sprinter is a strategy,
Following your lead out rider is a tactic.
Eating like an athlete is a strategy,
Skipping cake tonight is a tactic.
Getting as aero as possible is a strategy,
Riding in the drops is a tactic.
Connecting riders to build a tribe is a strategy,
    Social media is a tactic.
Having fun is a life strategy,

    1.  THE EAT REAL FOOD DIET.  This amazing breakthrough means limiting your food in take to every single food in the grocery store that isn't in a package.  Eat all the fresh fruit and vegetables and nuts and lean cuts of meat and fish that you want.

    2.  THE EAT LESS DIET.  Science, real hardcore science, has now proven that if you eat less you'll lose weight.  Crazy!, right?  So eat everything you can sink your teeth into, just cut down your total caloric in take a fraction.

    3.  BECAUSE 1 + 2 = 3 I'm throwing in this extra knock out diet, THE EAT LESS/EAT REAL DIET.  This truly is revolutionary and delivers unbelieveable results.  By reducing your caloric in take a fraction and eating real food you will look and feel amazing.

    4.  BECAUSE #3 is 1 heck of a plan and delivers such life changing results it's completely reasonable and widely recommended that you fall off the wagon one day a week.

Have your cake and eat it too, once a week!
In two days you'll be right back where you were pre-cake,
and 5 days closer to your goal weight.

This is what I wanted to tell F.C. on the ride this morning,
between his labored explanation of how hard the ride had been,
and how he can't climb like angel any more (and he could, really),
    because he's packed on 15lbs.

    I hope he reads this,
    I miss his angelic thrashings.

THE THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE

THE THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE

    Jan 09, 2018 TODD BROWN

ONE OF THE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT BIKE RIDERS IS OUR COMPASSION FOR OTHERS.  It hit me today as I was triangled by three separate events.

First, Jason stopped by and picked up bags for a fundraiser he organized.  Our friend Ed's daughter is in the battle of her life with cancer.  Jason has been driving all over town today, in the rain, picking up donations.  The event is at Docent Brewery.  Here's a link.

Next, Dawn Niday pinged me on FB.  If I get you volunteers for HUNKR can you donate to CAF?  Dawn is one of the top fundraisers for the Challenged Athlete Foundation.  She puts on an amazing event every year, raising 10s of $1000s.

But, it really hit me hard when we shipped the gear out for JT Racing.  This a team dedicated to the memory of a beautiful woman, wife and mother.

Why my sweet friends dedicate their time and talents is not the question...

    What can I do?
    Who can I help?
    Where am I needed?
How can I be of service?

    60/40... WELL PUNK?

    Jan 08, 2018 TODD BROWN

AM I 60 OR 40? WAS THE QUESTION WHEN I ROLLED OUT THIS MORNING.  Ya gotta love the rainy season and the nebulous percent predictions.  When the app says 60% chance of rain, I always wonder...

Will I ride in the 40% or soak in the 60%?

FunFact: when the app says 60%, it means 60% of the time with conditions like today it's going to rain... it doesn't mean it's to be dry on 40% of the ride.

Well punk, do you feel lucky?

I opted to go, and took my MTB. My road bike is too perty, and I want to keep it race-ready.  The MTB has awesome disc brakes, and I am not going to be racing it any time soon.

But, all that got me thinking... I really should have a back up road bike, a "cheapo" that's the exact same fit as my race bike.  Fortunately for me, and a lot of riders, the bike I ride actually comes in a really affordable version. If that's not on offer, just find a Craig's List Special.  I think I'll order one up.

I've always wanted to have a back up bike,
it's weird that I've never had one,
not that I deserve it, or I'm pro,
but, it did rain on me.
    Just my luck...

    (right before it poured)

    CODE WORDS

    CODE WORDS

    Jan 07, 2018 TODD BROWN

MY BUDDY MIKE ASKED HOW MY BLOG WAS GOING.  Before I could answer, he said he wanted to do that LaJa ride.

    My look kept him trying...

    LaRa

    And trying...

LaTa, it's a ride from Wyoming to Colorado.

Oh, LoToJa... It's Logan, UT to Jackson Hole.  200 miles.

Yeah, I want to do that.

    Well, you better start riding.

    But, what do I do?

Read my blog (he asked).  Start with Base Miles.  Do you have a bike?

    Yes, I do.

I could tell he was doing and mental inventory of his vast collection of bike gear.  He mumbled... bike, attach cleats to shoes, helmet, shorts... not shirt with long zipper...

I don't have one of those shirts with the long zipper.

We sell those (he asked, again).  So we went to our site on his iPad.  I showed him the blog.  He subscribed, which reminded me I need to start emailing posts to subscribers.

He clicked on the dropdown menu and then I realized...
How guilty I am of using code words instead of English.

Here's his interpretation of our shiny new website:

Kits... what are those bike parts?  No Mike, that's what we call the jerseys and bibs.  (Jeez, that was a huge miss on my part).

Bibs, the suspender thingies?  I'm not wearing those.  You will, once start riding and want maximum comfort.  (Another miss, not explaining how nice bibs are... and also not having shorts without braces as an option to get guys like Mike started.)

RaceDay Bags... I won't need that.  You will, if you to be organized and make your life really simple.  (Another miss?... should we re-name the bag, or just the category?)

Canopies... what are those?  He clicked and said,  Oh EZUPs.

Should I ditch the code words?... I don't think so.  I think it's cool when people like Mike figure out the code words.  They feel in the know, part of something special...

The coolest code word is the one we'll work on first,
because Lo-To-Ja is code for I'm a badass,
and to be a badass on a bike,
    You need to start with,
    Let's go for a spin.

    BIG CV & HUNKR TRAINING

    BIG CV & HUNKR TRAINING

    Jan 06, 2018 TODD BROWN

I DON'T ALWAYS POST 2X A DAY, but sometimes when you are a man AND you wear stretchy pants...

10 of us met at the corner.
7am, Golden Lantern and Dana Harbor.
It was warmer than it has been, fog had rolled in.
Our mission was to try out a newish route, something to get us ready for HUNKR OC.

We picked up 3 more riders in Laguna Canyon... I say "riders" to hide the fact that we're all dudes.  C'mon ladies we need more of you on the road.

The talent level of these 13 riders is exceptionally high, but our fitness levels are quite varied:  from a current pro MTB racer in his prime to an athlete coming back after an achilles tear and 18 months off the bike, with a couple of old diesels in between.  That said, the ride up the coast and up the canyon was full gas for some of us and a nice warm up for others.

What were we warming up for?  C.V.  Canyon Velo.

CV is a ride that has turned so nasty most of the original guys don't even do it.  Not nasty in a bad way, nasty in a good way.  Nasty fast.  Nasty hard.  Of the 2 main Saturday group rides in South OC, CV features more hills and longer climbs.

Our plan was to make it even nastier.

When we got to Sand Canyon and Trabuco we had a 8 minutes to spare.  This was due to my Nervous Nellyness which kept the pace a tad erratic... and probably was the cause of us shedding some of our posse a little early in the ride.  Whoops.

From this point, the hills start hitting then clobbering with unrepentant velocity.  One by one, the weak are knocked off.  The final hill of the first section is La Paz.  La Paz was the featured climb of the '84 Olympics.  It's not steep, it's the speed that kills.  1 mile, 5%... all out.  Peter Stetina holds the KOM at 3:22.  You won't be close to that... too judgmental?

The good news is the original CVrs put in a still-respected rest stop at the top of La Paz, at the ball park.   This is the 2 hour mark for us, which is a perfect time to re-load the bottles and unload _____.

    Now for the nastiness.

The next 50 minutes the group covers 17 miles and 1300' of elevation gain... 20.4 mph, pretty darn good.

We go all out up the final 4 miles of climbing including The Wall a heinous, 1/4 mile at 9%.  At the top of Santiago everybody cruises down to the big oak tree to re-group...

    ...but we don't!

We turn right, and go up Old Mojeska.  1/2 a mile, average gradient of 9% and the steepest section is 20%.

    That's nasty!
    but that's what some do
    when it's HUNKR time,
    and you wear stretchy pants.

3 THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN TRAINING FOR HUNKRS

3 THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN TRAINING FOR HUNKRS

    by Todd Brown

    1.  First off, remember HUNKR is about your personal best over 100K.  Sure, we all want to win and we’ll have cool awards for the category winners and cash for the top finishers.   But, even the winners will be looking at their finishing times and comparing it to what they thought they could do, what they did at the last HUNKR, how they compare to their friends.

    This means…

You should try and get some good group rides in.  Group rides will help you with bike handling, cooperation and riding in a pace line.  With a good group, you’ll go much faster than on your own.  It’s quite common for HUNKR riders to find themselves in great groups of guys and gals of similar ability.  The result is a lot of fun and friendship.  You can find groups on TribeFindr, Strava and other platforms… or start your own.

    2.  Remember a HUNKR course is about equal in distance to most longish weekend road rides.  If you can ride your bike easily 30 miles, you’ll do great at a HUNKR.  You don’t need to do a bunch of crazy miles.

    This means…

You should look at your HUNKR course and work in some similar terrain.  If it’s a flat HUNKR, work on your flat speed, if it’s a climbing HUNKR work on your climbing.  Get as specific as you can in the weeks leading up to your event.

    3.  Remember to test out your food.  For the faster riders, they’ll be fine with 2 bottles.  Some of you will need to make a stop, and we’ll have aid stations for you.

    This means…

If you think you’ll be needing to refill your bottle, be sure to check out our drink sponsor and try their product in advance.  We’ll also have quick snacks for you to munch on.

    4. Remember to get your FUNKR team of 5 together and registered.

    5. Have fun!  You’re going to do great out there.

HEY TODD: WHAT ARE BASE MILES?

HEY TODD: WHAT ARE BASE MILES?

    Jan 05, 2018 TODD BROWN

I'VE GOT TO GET THIS OFF MY CHEST, BECAUSE 90% OF BIKE RIDERS ARE PLATEAUED OUT:  they simply haven't grasped what constitutes base miles.  While I hate to give away my hard earned secrets, I know for a fact that 90% of the 90% won't apply this no matter how simple I 'xplain it.

Most of us start here - short and low... easy efforts, and it's lots of fun... as it should be.

We progress to here - fat middle... we realize if we ride a little more and a little faster it's even more fun... plus we can keep up and even be faster than our friends.

The problem is we get all geeked up and go here.  This is just human nature, being greedy... just because a little more riding and a little more effort made you faster, it does not mean more of each and none of what go you here is better.  In fact, it's worse, a lot worse.

Because you wind up here - broken pieces... and outta the sport, fat and on the couch again.

What you want to do is this... spend the vast majority of your time at conversational speed, cruising with your friends, feeling the pain of a hard day spin right out of your legs.

You'll add some tempo without trying... and I heartily recommend you do all you can to avoid tempo.  You're going to get it anyway, and it's not very useful.

See what this gives you?... a great big giant base of easy, pleasant miles.  You're rested, so that when it's to time get after it you can really get after it in ways you never thought possible.

I know what your thinking... trust me, you're going to screw it up anyway and ride too much tempo and too much intensity.  I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible for you... so you can get a lot faster and KOM everything in site... I believe in you, do you?

    That's what base miles are,
    the foundation for greatness.
    No base, no greatness

    __________

Corollary:  You can apply this to anything:  work - clean up lot more, get organized then execute on the good stuff; dating - romance a lot more, open doors, bring flowers, just talk into each others eyes, then the special times are truly special.

    CONFIDENT ZOMBIE

    CONFIDENT ZOMBIE

    Jan 04, 2018 TODD BROWN

ON OUR WEEKLY SOCIAL RIDE, THE TMWC, THERE ARE A FEW INCLINES GUARANTEED TO MAKE YOU CRY.  The killers come and go through the years, those riders that rip your heart out, but the dead keep coming back - zombies lead to slaughter.

As a zombie, my confidence ebbs and flows... as it does for the entire TMWC Zombie Nation - did I mention we ride year round at 630am?

But, occasionally one of us will do something and gain some confidence... which is what is happening with Big Mike On The Mic...

... which I find quite disturbing and upsetting
Who does that zombie think he is?!...

He's Big Mike because he's gigantic, not for bike a rider but for a man.  He's well over 6' and 200+ lbs of pure muscle.  His broad, college swimmer shoulders push through the wind like a real diesel and his massive, college swimmer lungs suck the air out of the neighborhood.

... he has no business blowing passed me on the climbs ...

When I first came back to the road, Mike and I would duel on the Thursday night RnR shop ride.  But, then I lost weight and committed to the road mainly to see if I could stay ahead of him.  And for the last 5 years, it's gone my way.

    ... now, I'm not braggin... I'm just sayin' ...

He's On The Mic, because he's been shooting video for the last 4 months or so and documenting how the group is doing with very insightful comments:  look at HUNKR guy spin, Jorge always wears pink socks, etc.

... But, the comment that really gets me... just irks me
    is
    There's Todd ...

It didn't used to bug me.  It pumped me up, because it followed with me disappearing up the road.  But not now, now it's...

    ... There's Todd going backwards ...

Somehow that damn mic has given him confidence.  First, he confidently hung on until the A Loop.  Then, he hung on over The Wall,  Now, he's riding the A Loop and making it over The Wall...

... and my confidence is shattered.
    Kinda,
    and, kinda not shattered.
I'm stoked for BMOTM to get faster...
... and confident, if he can do it so can I ...
Which is why I love being a Zombie.

    IT WASN'T NECESSARILY A RESOLUTION

    IT WASN'T NECESSARILY A RESOLUTION

    Jan 03, 2018 TODD BROWN

    I RODE MY BIKE YESTERDAY.

The 250 or the 400?, I asked my moto-loving little bro.

    The pedal one.

No way!... What the heck? (he got married, had two kids since our last ride)  Must have been a New Year's resolution?

It wasn't necessarily a resolution. I was driving and saw a guy on a Ritte... sped up and it was Mike.  I told him to head to my house.

    How was it?

    I'm fat and slow.

    But, that can change..

I know, and it's going to!

We chatted some more, and it got me thinking...
if my brother starts riding again,
and my son starts riding again,
and your friends and family are riding again
    well, Happy New Year!

    WHAT'S INSIDE CHRIS FROOME'S RACEDAY BAG(tm)?

    WHAT'S INSIDE CHRIS FROOME'S RACEDAY BAG(tm)?

    Jan 02, 2018 TODD BROWN

BY TODD BROWN | PEDAL industries

    January 2nd, 2018

AS NEWS SPREADS AROUND THE WORLD OF CHRIS FROOME'S MASSIVE OVER THE LIMIT TEST RESULTS OF THE DRUG SALBUTOMOL, fans and haters alike want to know where is his race bag and what does he keep in it?

We took extraordinary results to contact the Froome/SKY media machine and we received the following statement.

The contents of Mr. Froome's bag are classified.  Our team of professionals as well as Mr Froome himself are in complete control of what goes in the bag and what comes out of the bag.

However, there are times when all of us forget what we need to pack and so we are researching the market place for a new bag for race day.

Upon reading such news, this reporter selfishly, self-servingly and shamelessly shares the following link -> https://pedalindustries.com/pages/raceday-bags.

Like all cycling clubs and teams, Team SKY is highly encouraged to send their artwork to PEDAL Industries in for a free mock up of a RaceDay Bag (tm).  Upon doing so, Team SKY and Mr. Froome would see that each pocket of the bag is clearly labeled thereby averting a disaster the likes of these professionals now face.

Rumor has it many teams even get their first bag free.

    THAT WAS HARD

LAST WEEK I SET A GOAL TO RIDE 20 HOURS FROM CHRISTMAS DAY TO NEW YEAR’S DAY.  I had seen the Rapha challenge 500 kilometers in the same time period.  Kilometers are a tad silly in ‘Merica, but I’d say a distance goal is even sillier.  The equivalent distance goal is about 300 miles.  For a pro, that’s 15 hours or less.  For average Joe, it’s more like 20 hours.  But if you’re a mountain biker it could be 30 hours, and if your snow bound it could be… 3 months ’till you ride outside again.

    Hours are so much better.

20 hours, however, turned out to be pretty darn hard.  That’s about double what I’ve been riding.

    What did it take?

First, it took a ton of time… obviously, but it’s less obvious than you think if you’re already busy.  I already work hard to carve out my ten hours.  The only way it worked is it was a light week work-wise.

It took commitment.  There were days I didn’t want to do the time.  Thursday was particularly hard, I just looked at my mountain bike arguing with myself for an hour on whether or not to go.  At that point I’d ridden 8 hours from Mon-Wed and I was tired.  But, today, New Year’s Day, was the hardest.  I was really sick of riding having ridden 18.5 hours from Mon-Sat.  To make up for spousal neglect,  I’d promised Surfergirl to take her paddle boarding first thing… we paddled 6 miles in 2 hours… heading out for the last 90 minutes of bike time was dreadful.

It required a singular focus for the week.  No time for lifting weights, which I really missed.  No time for TV.  No time for surf… and there were some good days.  No time for resting.

    What did I learn?

I learned I could do the Swami’s Wednesday ride no problem even with nearly 7 hours the previous 2 days.  I learned the Bus Stop ride is a fun ride in Newport.  I learned 20 hours is too many hours in a week for me.  Even though I made every effort to ride easy it was still very tiring.  Mainly, I learned I prefer 10-12 hours.

Did I lose any weight?  Nope.  Woke up heavier today than last Monday.  NYE!

    What did I gain?

Well, I’m not entirely sure.  That’s why I’m going to have to deconstruct the week with Coach Paul… stay tuned for that.

(the pic up there… that’s my shadow, about all that was left of my passion for 2 wheels.)

These kids are so fun to be around, happy and energetic and on the cusp of life.  When I graduated high school, I remember making a promise to myself not to be old.  Having young friends certainly helps.

Steven is sharing his family custom of writing down things they are ashamed of from 2017.  He blurts out… crashing out myself, my dad and my brother at LoToJa is definitely on the list!

    … bike riders
    and our secrets…

All of them have been willing to play a round of chess on my new magnetic board.  The best part about this is they have no idea how the game is played and I’m undefeated, #winning.

We’ll be watching YouTube Live so we can go to bed early, and they can arrive at the real party knowing how the night ends.

We’re gonna rise early with the sun,
    Load up the paddle boards,
    and paddle south.
    It’s a New Year,

EACH DAY AS I SIT DOWN TO WRITE I SEE “ENTER TITLE HERE” IN THE BLOG SOFTWARE.  Sometimes the title hits me when I wake up, others on my ride, and a few exit my brain when I see that command.

Many of your ride titles this week on STRAVA have referenced the end of the year with accents like Great Year!, Mission Accomplished!, Made My Goal of X Miles or Y Vertical.

You inspire me.  Flicking through your posts, is always motivating.

Early risers who finish at dawn.
    Mid-day lunch blasts,
    Snowbound Zwifters,
Young parents getting it done after bedtime.

Squeezing in the rides from Monday to Friday, often alone, staying fit and sane.  Weekends turn into rolling meet ups and life updates, and occasionally legs are ripped off… but, what are friends for?

I ride alone often, mostly on the “easy” days, at a ponderous pace.  This is precious time to reflect on how our kids are doing and if the trophy wife is becoming a bike widow (this has been a super selfish week – so yeah, guilty).  It’s also time to think through what I’m reading… and I read a lot.

This year I read more to learn than be entertained, and I think I’m better for it.  Here are the top 4: Basic Economics.  It’s a giant book that breaks down how our economy works and why it is so efficient vs a centrally planned economy.  I read two autobiographies:  Steve Jobs and  Walt Disney.  These books helped me better understand creativity and the importance of perfection.  The most profound book of the year was A Short History of Nearly Everything.  It’s hard to put into words the effect this book has had on me.  Let me try in one sentence:  whether we are here on Earth by chance or providence, our being here is fragile and miraculous.

There are a lot of good titles out there.  What’s your favorite?

THERE’S NOBODY LIKE YOU GUYS.  I hear that a lot.  It’s not a huge mystery, it has a lot to do with our history.

We make stuff, and we’ve been doing it for a long time.

It’s the focus of the last 5 years on cycling that has us where we are today.  It’s saying no to the projects that take us off mission… this is much, much harder to do than it looks because those off-mission projects can be sooo profitable.  It’s staying true to cycling.  It’s creating what we want to use ourselves and not trying to compete.  It’s caring more about you and how we can best serve you.

But, that’s also the best way to bring out your ultimate cycling self.

You do it for a long time.  It takes 3 years to find out what kind of rider you are.

You focus.  You say no to activities and food that take you off mission… this aint easy, heck I’ve put on 3 lbs this month by letting my guard down.  It’s staying true to cycling.  It’s creating your vision of how you want to ride.  It’s caring more about you, not to the detriment of all other relationships and pursuits but to enhance your entire life by being the ultimate physical specimen you can be.

Without our health we are nothing.
With our health we can do anything,
    If we care more.

    THIS SPARROW CAN FLY

I’LL NEVER HESITATE TO INVITE A FRIEND ON A BIKE RIDE.  The part I question myself on is Will this ride be good for this friend?  As a good host, I try and match the pace and route to my friends’ abilities.  But, when I post up a ride we’re doing on social media I have no idea of the ability a rider who wants to join us possesses.

So… when Sparrow said he was joining us this morning for the jaunt down to Oceanside I was stoked to meet him in person, and hopeful he’d be able to hang on the return.

Here’s what he was getting himself into…

The ride down is about an hour and a conversational pace.  Very lovely.

At the end of Camp Pendleton we meet the Swami’s group.  This is not just any group ride, this is the fastest, mostly flat ride you’ll ever do.  Ever.  Should you venture towards the front of the 50+ riders and take a turn you’ll be lucky to pull off fast enough and have the strength to get back on at the back.  It’s common for the group to average 30 mph on the flats.  But it’s not all flat.  There are a few punchy climbs which the group will attack, trying to get rid of the chaff.  Why are they trying to get rid of you?  Because you most likely are not a Pro or a Cat 1 or a Cat 2… they are, and there are lots of them and one of you.  Got it, they aren’t trying… they are just crazy fast.

Knowing all that… when I post up a ride I try and make it sound as terrible as possible.  Because I’m a firm believer in the No Drop rule – don’t get dropped.

How’d Sparrow do? … hahaha… his ride is called Ego Check, and he got 65 Cups.  But, the real story is he hung on fine.  Got to the front a few times, went backwards so fast it reminded me of two guys parachuting and one opens the chute and disappears.  This is the cool part… he clawed his way back on each time.

    This Sparrow can fly.

I asked Sparrow how long he’d been riding.  About 5 years.

How’d you get into it?  When I graduated college I was living in L.A. without a car.  I had $300, so I bought a fixie.  Then, 3 years ago I bought a road bike and really fell in love.

What did you get your degree in?  Graphic arts and Kinesiology. I work at Two Wheels One Planet and get to use my degrees doing all the graphics for the store and fitting people properly to their bikes.

That’s awesome.  Thanks.  You know what else is awesome?

What?  The RaceDay bag.  I love it.

How’d you find out about it?  You posted it, and I had to have one.

No way.  How’d you find my post?  I follow all the guys I ride with and we rode together on Food Park.

… Is there a moral to this story?
Yes, invite people to ride with you.
Try and tear their legs off, or not.
    And after swap stories.

    Fatness To Fitness

Because, that’s the goal… to take that thickening winter coat and burn it off this week.  One week, to go from fatness to fitness.

Today we added a bunch of miles and vert to the TMWC.

Everyday is going to be big-ish.  I’ll post ’em here the day before.  Tomorrow is the famous Swami’s Wednesday ride… lots of big names show up on that ride.

All the Whos in Whoville were sound asleep.  The streets were empty.
But, I was awake and my heart was full.
How could 30 years pass so fast?
When our family was little I thought it would last and last.

A Christian greeted me and the sun and the homeless,
With cookies and cocoa and a warm smile.
Good morning kind sir, How’s business?
Quite well, quite well… replied the Witness

The waves to my right swept across the sand,
memories of countless Eves of assemblin’
surfed through my soul’s twinkling eye
Of times when I played the white-bearded guy

    I couldn’t pedal any more, I slowed
My heart was too full to roll on
The ride of my life is going fast,
It’s Christmas, and I believe it will last and last.

Little pressed for time on this one.

THIS IS NOT A PRODUCT REVIEW, BUT I AM GOING TO REVIEW A RECENT ACQUISITION.  Since none of our loved ones dare venture into our obsession I feel pretty safe sharing this beautiful truth on the interwebs.  Because, if you’re at all like me you already bought yourself a Christmas present…

… and you had to, right?

Who in their right mind would pay what we pay for the things we love most, not the people we love most – they are priceless – but the things.  Specifically, the bike things.

Just like I would never tell an outsider that I rode my bike 80 miles yesterday because that’s just sounds so completely insane.  It’s like riding from here to Pasadena, which I would never drive in my car unless life hung in the balance…

… I also would never, ever share with someone what I paid for my new ENVE wheels…

We have this very conspicuous consumption, in plain site, and only our secret society of cyclists has the vaguest notion of what we’re up to.

Which is exactly why when your friend/mom/dad/grandparents/sibs/coworkers ask you what you want for Christmas you say either:

I’d just like to spend time with you
    or
A new shirt would be great.

NowayJose am I, or you, going to let on what we are coveting at the local bike shop.  What I am going to do… is, I’m going to sneak down there sometime this month and pick up my new ________ when nobody is looking, swap it out on my bike, and pray I don’t get busted…

    … Santa knows I’ve been a very bad boy…

I snagged a pair of magic ENVE wheels from RockNRoad.  It’s a fairly long story of how these wheels found themselves on my bike.  But, hot damn, I rode ’em yesterday on Swami’s Long and…

… now pay attention y’all, this is me not reviewing the product.  Why don’t I review product?  Because I don’t believe in science, I believe in the spirit of the product -> the way it makes me feel, the way it sounds, the way it handles, even the way it looks.  Some like numbers, I like results…

I rode ’em yesterday on Swami’s Long, and for the first time ever in my 30+ attempts on that most vile ride, I made it to the store/regroup with the leaders, pinging off PR’s along the way…

… maybe I have been a good boy?
    … maybe Santa knew?
    … maybe ______ won’t notice?
… hopefully, you scored something too?

ME AND THE BOYS HEADED DOWN TO SWAMI’S TODAY.  Swami’s is a terrible ride.  Fast, fast, fast.  But, there are a few added bonuses for guys like us.

First, I’m the only one of the 6 of us that’s done it enough to vaguely know the route.  So there’s the bonus of finding yourself at the front of the group as you rotate through and they go left while you go straight… yep, we had a rookie pull that move.

Second, not knowing who the players are you can get gapped out pretty quickly.  I spent the first half of the ride battling Team Openthegap.

Third, and this is the best one.  No respect.  You’ll get none from the regulars.    You have to fight and claw for every single position.  If you’re not careful you’ll be spit out the back wondering What happened?

And that’s what makes it so darn fun.

    The battle.

If you manage to make it to the store, occasionally one of the regulars might actually – accidentally – say Nice riding bro.  But, to get that you’ll have to go full asthamafroometatcular.  There’s no other way… unless you’re actually fast.  You earned it… so way You too dude.

The other thing you earned was the rollercoaster back to the coast.  It twists and turns and rolls up and down for miles on end.  One of the funnest, fastest 20+ miles ever.

Sooooo… join us next time. (We post the rides in the Pedal Industries Strava Club).

    My deets: https://www.strava.com/activities/1324654999

We park in Oceanside and ride to Encinitas… this is where we wait for the group.

The wall across from the store… where the regulars sit. Notice no room at the inn for the old diesel.
Checking out Andy’s new Sprinter – he did all the work himself. It’s rad.
    Uh oh.

HEY, WHAT KIND OF BIKE DO YOU HAVE?  It came from high on the hill on the opposite side of our street.  A man, unknown to me, had yelled it.

    Harmless enough?

I wasn’t so sure.  We’ve had a number burglaries in our neighborhood, and we have a few “halfway houses”.  Plus, not long ago people were being stalked on Strava after posting their amazing bike pics only to have their garages broken into.  Strava makes it so you can hide your home now, where your rides originate.  I recommend that, regardless.

Cautiously I yelled back, It’s aluminum.

No need to say I’m riding The Marvel, or Specialized, or give any hint of value.

    He yelled, Pinarello Dogma.

Not, I have a Pinarello Dogma.  He knew what he was yelling was code for I’m legit.

Which followed with, We should ride some time.

Are you on Strava? I queried.

    Yes.

    What’s your name?

Peter Frampton (that’s not his name).

I quickly looked him up on Strava… sho ‘nuf.  He’s there.  And, I’m thinking… nice Eyetalian bike, active Strava profile…

    Yeah, let’s ride some time.

I’m going for the first ride in 3 months tomorrow.  Had back surgery.  Doc cleared me today.

That’s awesome, have a great ride!

The pre-dawn darkness that greets me and my bike lights this time of year is cold.  And, dark.  Not unfriendly, but not welcoming.  It’s me and The Marvel, and since nary a soul is up, it’s just us.

The first man and woman on earth.

    Adam and Eve… kinda.

Mounted, we roll into the quiet.  In time, we see other early human shapes.  Mostly joggers.  Some walkers.  Dogs.

The air chills my cheeks, fills my lungs, and brings my brain to life.

I’m alive!… and the world sleeps.

I’m working out… and the world sleeps.

I’m invigorated… and the world sleeps.

Dawn comes.  The sky brightens.  But, before the sun shows forth there is this gigantic wave of hope that comes over me.

    Hope for warmth.

Hope for things to work out well.

Hope for the sun to rise and bless us all with a beautiful new day.

I KNOW I’M AN OKAY CLIMBER, DESCENT SPRINTER AND RIPPING DESCENDER.  I know what type of courses suit my bag of tricks.

What’s weird is I rarely work on my sprint… and a lot races come down to a sprint.

There are two parts to sprinting that I could work on:  one is science, and one is art.

The science part is pretty simple and you can do it alone.  Figure out how far you can sprint.  Then, just practice that a lot… the wind up and the knock out punch of it all.  You can lift weights and do plyometrics to build power.

But, it’s the art part that makes a winner a winner and everybody else… losers.  The art is feeling the wind, smelling the angst, sensing the posers and clawing onto the players.

The artful sprinter uses all six senses and unleashes an elegant fury at just the right moment.
Doing it with ease and calm.
    All others are winded,
the artful one is the wind.

…wake up Todd, quit dreaming.  Do what you love to do, long epic rides… ride yourself into ecstasy…

… oh, wow… what a dream… which reminds me of the nightmare I have planned for Saturday:

Swami’s Long.  It’s a terrible ride.  Horrifically fast.  With fire breathing demons who give no quarter and spare nobody… specially outta towners.

EYE DO DECLARE, THESE NEW OAKLEY’S ARE TRE RAD.   Eye know eye’m late to the party, BST is how I roll.  But, eye’ve finally arrived with the sweetest pair of Jawbreakers.

    Why so sweet?

Eye love the massive field of view, way bigger than standard dual-lens set ups.

The full-frame wrap keeps the lens in place and protects my beautiful skin… eve’ve seen a naked lens turn into a slice-o-matic on impact.

Airflow was awesome this morning, no fog build up… plus, plus, plus more of my handsome face was covered and protected from the 34 degree wind eye battled.

Even eye can easily swap out the lenses, which means they’ll stay pristine.

And get this, the stems are adjustable for misshapen heads like mine.

K, best part ->  Eye got the polarized PRIZM lens.  Which means eye can head out early in the dark, cold, lonely morning… ride through a stunning sunrise… into a beautiful California day… with the same pair of glasses.

    Wouldn’t call ’em cheap
    They’re perfect for

All the Ghost of Christmas Past shows me is red.  Red sells.  Red looks fast.  Red is…

    RED!

My trike was red.  I remember it well.  Red paint, white stripes.  Solid rubber black wheels.  Just the thing to escape over to Jamie Figueroa’s.

My scooter was red.  It was a forerunner to the Razor.  Red platform, silver steerer.  Air filled white tires.  Stupid as it sounds, I was known as the Steve McQueen of Gnat Park.

My Big Wheel was red… I was like 14, way to old, but we’d found this giant hill planted with that crazy long grass.  First we bombed it on cardboard, but then we realized a Big Wheel was much more fun.  It lasted about a week.

My Schwinn Sting Ray started off red.  Probably put more miles on that bike than any other… rode it to school, to the store, to the beach, to my friends, to the orthodontist (hated that), to the huge drainage ditch we’d drop into and pop out of… and ride through in pitch black… and every Saturday morning to the new home construction sites with the terraced plots to jump off.  It died silver I think… we took those things apart and sanded and painted them constantly.

My Schwinn Le Tour was red.  This one was over $100, and I begged and begged for it.  I wanted to be able to ride the 8 miles from home to the tennis club, I wanted to get places.  I had no idea what “Le Tour” would come to mean later.  It was so light, and fast… even with my canvas back pack filled with tennis gear.

My final kid Christmas bike was not red.  The unicycle was silver.  I was 17, and wanted a toy.  Even though I had a red Honda Civic, I’d still ride the uni 2 miles to Sonora High School just because I could.

Pre-kids, the Trophy Wife surprised me with a red Cannondale… aluminum with giant tubes.  Rode that thing from Cat IV to Cat III.  So fun.

THIS REALLY HAPPENED.  Finally, after years and years and miles and miles… it happened.

How many times have a thought it would?

    A gazillion.

    But it never had.

There had been close encounters.  Near misses.  But no hits.

    Until today…

Just before dawn, in the chilly shadows, I was riding along the bike path above Salt Creek.  Out the corner of my right eye I see a flash of white.  Then something hits my head.  There’s a golf course to my left, but nobody is that bad this early.  Plus, a golf ball would have really rung my bell.

    It was a flipping seagull.

Little feller bounced off my helmet, corrected it’s flight and kept on going.

You got a long way to go Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

… now, if you follow that link you can read the plot to a famous and mostly forgotten book.  It’s worth it because of nuggets like this: begin by knowing that you have already arrived.

What else is worth it?… giving a few bucks to my favorite website, Wikipedia.

I KNOW IT WAS BRISK, AND I KNOW YOU WERE FEELING FRISKY, BUT THAT WASN’T A RISK… THAT WAS PURE ROOKIE MOVE.  I mean gadzooks, What were you thinking? Was it… I know this has never worked before but I just have to try it one more time? Or… I know this is the silliest.. More

Or… I know this is the silliest move ever, but I really want to do this so I can get dropped sooner?

Or… ah, crud!… I’m not even going to keep listing because the reasons I would come up with would just be so ridiculous. But, not as kooky as actually doing what you done did.

I mean do it, if you’re just feeling like Superman.  Maybe you were?  No you weren’t because you dropped anchor as soon as you’d done your foolish deed.

Not me, I was dangling like a piece of dry dung on a fat cow’s swinging tail.  My jaw dropped so hard it dislocated. Surely, y’all weren’t doin’ what ya was doin’?!!

That move… it breaks my heart reliving it again… that move played right into the hands of the Monster and Red Devil.

    How could you do it?

    HOW

    How

    how…

How could you pull the those beasts up to the first breakaway in months that had a shot of breaking their stranglehold on the TMWC podium?
